What are the responsibilities and job description for the Orthotics and Prosthetics Technician Specializing in Metal Work position at Prevail Prosthetics & Orthotics?
Prevail is looking for a full-time O&P Technician for our Fort Wayne location on W. Jefferson Blvd. Technicians are responsible for the fabrication, assembly, and repair of custom orthotic and prosthetic devices, with a primary focus on Knee-Ankle-Foot Orthoses (KAFOs) and Ankle-Foot Orthoses (AFOs), including metal-andleather devices (e.g., L2036, L 1990). The technician works from practitioner specifications, casts, and measurements to ensure orthoses and prostheses meet patient needs, safety standards, and clinical requirements.
Hours are Mon. – Thur. 7:30a – 5:00p and Fri. 8:00a – 12:00p. Travel between our six locations may be occasionally necessary. Our offices span from Fort Wayne, IN to Indianapolis, IN.
Fabrication & Assembly:
Fabricate, fit, and finish KAFOs and AFOs using metal, leather, plastic, and mechanical components.
Fabrication of prosthetic sockets is also required.
Bend, shape, and cut metal uprights and joints according to practitioner specifications.
Assemble ankle and knee joints, stirrups, bands, and other hardware.
Prepare and attach leather and padding components for patient comfort.
Ensure alignment, strength, and functionality of devices before delivery.
Technical Skills:
Operate machinery such as metal grinders, band saws, hand saws, riveters, commercial sewing machines, drill presses, etc.
Work with orthopedic-grade metals, plastics, and leathers.
Apply finishing techniques to ensure safety, durability, and aesthetics of devices.
Quality Assurance:
Verify that completed orthoses meet all prescription specifications and quality standards.
Perform repairs and adjustments on devices as needed.
Maintain accurate records of fabrication processes and materials used.
Collaboration:
Work closely with certified orthotists to interpret work orders and prescriptions.
Provide technical input to improve design, function, and patient outcomes.
Support inventory management of materials, tools, and components.
Skills:
Strong knowledge of orthotic componentry (KAFO joints, stirrups, bands, shoe attachments, etc).
Proficiency in metal bending, welding, riveting, and mechanical assembly.
Ability to read and interpret practitioner's specifications, casts, and blueprints.
Attention to detail, manual dexterity, and problem-solving skills.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Extended periods of standing, bending, and using machinery.
Comfortable working with metal, leather, and adhesives in a shop environment
Education/Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent (required)
