The Controls Engineer is an exempt, professional engineering role responsible for the design, programming, integration, and continuous improvement of complex automation and control systems that support Food & Beverage manufacturing operations. The position applies advanced knowledge of electrical engineering, industrial controls, and automation to develop control strategies, optimize system performance, and ensure safe, reliable, and efficient production. The Controls Engineer exercises independent judgment in planning and executing automation projects, establishing technical standards, and resolving high-level control system issues that impact plant performance, quality, and safety.
Essential Job Functions
Controls Design, Programming, and Standards
- Design, develop, modify, and maintain PLC, HMI, and SCADA applications (including AllenBradley and Wonderware platforms) for new and existing production systems.
- Create and implement control logic, safety interlocks, sequencing, and alarming strategies that support safe, efficient, and highly reliable operations.
- Establish and maintain controls standards, programming conventions, and documentation practices for the facility.
- Engineer and integrate sensors, instrumentation, motors/drives, vision systems, robotics, and other automation components into production lines and utilities.
- Design and configure industrial networks (e.g., EtherNet/IP, Profinet) to ensure robust, secure, and highavailability communication between devices and systems.
- Collaborate with crossfunctional stakeholders (Operations, Maintenance, Quality, Safety, IT, and OEMs) to define requirements and implement automation solutions that meet business needs.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for complex electrical, instrumentation, networking, and control system issues, providing guidance to maintenance and operations teams.
- Use structured problemsolving, data analysis, and rootcause methodologies to diagnose recurring or highimpact automation problems and implement sustainable corrective actions.
- Provide technical leadership during critical breakdowns or production interruptions, including directing internal and external resources as needed.
- Lead the controls scope of capital projects, including concept development, design reviews, vendor coordination, FAT/SAT, commissioning, and validation of new equipment and system upgrades.
- Develop project plans, estimates, and schedules for automation initiatives and ensure delivery against cost, scope, quality, and timing expectations.
- Analyze production and system performance data to identify opportunities to increase uptime, reduce downtime, improve process control, enhance operator usability, and strengthen safety performance.
- Recommend and implement control system modifications and technology upgrades that drive longterm reliability and operational excellence.
- Develop and maintain accurate and current electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, control logic diagrams, network architecture drawings, change logs, and versioncontrol records.
- Ensure that all control system changes follow established managementofchange processes and align with internal standards, regulatory requirements, and applicable codes.
- Support internal and external audits by providing engineering documentation, technical justifications, and subject matter expertise related to automation and control systems.
- 5 years of experience in a Controls Engineering position or similar automation/controls-focused role.
- Engineering experience in Food & Beverage manufacturing is required.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related discipline.
- Proficiency with Allen-Bradley (Studio 5000, RSLogix, FactoryTalk).
- Experience with PLC and HMI platforms.
- Strong experience with Wonderware SCADA systems.
- Industrial networking experience (EtherNet/IP, Profinet, switches, VLANs).
- Strong electrical and instrumentation troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to design and interpret electrical schematics, P&IDs, and wiring diagrams.
- Project management skills for planning, executing, and documenting automation projects.
- Bilingual (Spanish fluency) strongly preferred.
- Must be able to work a flexible schedule (on call) as needed.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.

Salary : $90,000 - $110,000
