The Sr Mechanical Designer role is for someone who can turn engineers’ rough input into production-ready CAD models and drawings, with solid experience in machined and fabricated hardware. Here is what they’re looking for.
The core job
They want an individual contributor who takes sketches, notes, or verbal instructions from engineers and produces complete models, detail drawings, layouts, and BOMs for moderately to highly complex mechanical and electromechanical equipment. You’d work under technical leadership but are expected to show creativity and self-direction. You’d also review drawings against specs and standards, and your decisions can affect cost, schedule, and performance.
Must-haves
- Experience: An Associate degree plus 6 to 8 years of related experience, or 8 to 10 years without the degree.
- CAD/PDM: 5 years in SolidWorks with EPDM, or Creo with Windchill. They specifically want current SolidWorks (2015 or newer) skills in weldments, sheet metal, and machined parts.
- Design breadth: Proven work on machined and fabricated assemblies, including knowing machining practices and fabrication methods like welding and forming across different materials.
- Mixed assemblies: Experience documenting assemblies that combine electrical and mechanical components.
- BOMs: A solid grasp of indented BOMs and how they tie to upper-level assembly drawings.
- Tools: Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint).
- Standards: Familiarity with ANSI, ISO, ASME, IEEE, and MIL-STD, and the ability to work within them.
- Compliance: Awareness of ITAR and protecting company IP and technical data. This is defense-related work, so it matters.
