Title: Medical Assistant, Rheumatology Practice
Position: Full-Time, Non-Exempt
Hours: 40 hours per week
Location: Onsite in Fresno, CA
Position Summary
Premier Rheumatology is seeking a dedicated and compassionate Medical Assistant to join our independent rheumatology practice. This role is essential to ensuring excellent patient care, smooth clinical operations, and efficient support for our physicians and staff. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working in a collaborative, close-knit team environment.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support
- Prepare exam rooms, equipment, and supplies for patient visits.
- Escort patients to exam rooms, obtain vital signs, document medical history, and update electronic health records (EHR).
- Assist providers with procedures, injections, and medication administration (as permitted by state regulations).
- Perform phlebotomy, specimen collection, and lab processing when required.
- Administer and document diagnostic tests (e.g., urinalysis, EKGs) and monitor results.
- Provide patient education on medications, treatments, and self-care as directed by the provider.
Administrative Support
- Assist patients with completing disability and other medical paperwork, ensuring all forms are prepared for provider review and signature in a timely manner.
- Review patient charts approximately one week prior to scheduled appointments to confirm all requested tests, labs, and imaging have been received and documented.
- Coordinate and process pre-authorizations for diagnostic tests, imaging, referrals, and medications not managed directly by the billing company.
- Schedule patient appointments, follow-ups, and referrals.
- Manage phone calls, prescription refill requests, and patient inquiries in a timely manner.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records in the EHR system.
- Process prior authorizations, insurance forms, and laboratory/imaging orders.
- Monitor and maintain inventory of medical supplies and ensure exam rooms are stocked.
Patient Care & Practice Operations
- Foster a welcoming, supportive environment for patients and families.
- Work closely with physicians, nurse practitioners, and office staff to coordinate patient care.
- Support the practice in quality improvement initiatives and compliance with regulatory standards (OSHA, HIPAA).
- Communicate between the provider and the patients by phone, email, or messages that they come through the chart
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Completion of a certified Medical Assistant program required; CMA/RMA preferred.
- Current CPR certification.
- 1–2 years of experience in a medical office preferred; rheumatology or specialty practice experience a plus.
- Proficiency with electronic health records (EHR) systems.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, patient-focused environment.
- Proficiency in a second language, particularly Spanish, is preferred.
As a small practice, teamwork and flexibility are essential. All employees may be required to perform duties outside their primary job responsibilities to support overall practice operations and ensure continuity of patient care.
Employees are expected to provide cross-coverage for one another during absences due to vacation, illness, or other reasons. Employees must coordinate time off in advance and may be required to adjust Paid Time Off schedules during periods when the physician is out of the office or the Practice is closed.
