Specialty Triage & Referral Nurse (RN)

Job Purpose: Assist patients over the phone in determining their necessary level of care. Patient symptoms are evaluated and triaged using the nursing process and approved clinical guidelines to guide them toward suitable care levels or self-care instructions. Key responsibilities include managing provider referral faxes, following up to confirm scheduled appointments, and prioritizing OBGYN Department referrals. Additionally, this role assists with clinical staff inbox management, prescription refill processing, and test result delivery.

• Grasps fundamental insurance protocols relevant to setting up specific patient visits.
• Participates in mandatory staff meetings, training sessions, and assigned committee activities.
• Strictly preserves patient privacy and confidentiality.
• Manages specialist referrals by notifying patients, setting up appointments, and monitoring patient adherence.
• Verifies that receiving providers obtain all necessary patient orders, clinical data, and demographic details.
• Executes additional related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications and Requirements (Minimum, required, and preferred standards)

• Education: Registered Nurse (RN)
• Mandatory Certification: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
• Experience: At least 1 year of clinical practice in an outpatient medical facility utilizing Electronic Health Records (EHR) preferred
• Knowledge & Skills:
  • Comprehensive understanding of diagnostic routines, clinical examinations, and treatment room operations.

Awareness of clinical safety protocols and standard precautions for maintaining a safe environment.

Key Competencies and Skills: Proficiency in clinical examination, diagnostic protocols, and treatment room operations. Awareness of safety risks and adherence to standard clinical safety precautions. Skilled in measuring vital signs, managing records, and documenting test outcomes accurately. Proven ability to foster positive interpersonal relationships with patients, colleagues, and the public. Proficient in maintaining composure and operating efficiently during emergency situations. Capable of comprehending and executing detailed verbal and written directives. Demonstrates clear communication, precise medical documentation, strong grammatical skills, and proper spelling.

Required Licenses & Certifications: Active state nursing license and current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Work Environment: Potential exposure to medications, infectious agents, and typical outpatient clinic environmental factors.

Physical Requirements: Involves extended periods of sitting. Requires complete physical mobility, fine motor control, hand-eye coordination, and the ability to handle or assist with patient lifting and transfers. Standard visual and auditory acuity (corrected) required. Must be able to perform under high-stress conditions with potential exposure to bodily fluids or communicable diseases
