Position: CareFlight Program Educator - RN

Department: CareFlight Air & Mobile Services

Facility: Miami Valley Hospital

Shift: Part-time Days 7:00am-7:30pm/ 48 Hours Per Pay

General Summary/Responsibilities

The CareFlight Program Educator is a CareFlight clinical provider with professional development practice judgement and expertise who influences professional role competence and growth of learners in a variety of settings with a desired outcome of improved population health. This individual will support the program by coordinating professional development needs in collaboration with the Program Nurse Manager and leadership team, system Nursing Professional Development Specialists, System Nurse Manager for Clinical Education, and the Learning Institute. The roles of the Program Educator include:

Learning Facilitator, Change Agent, Mentor, Leader, Champion for Inquiry, Partner for Practice Transitions, and Advocate for education specialty. In addition, the individual may provide direct patient care in accordance with the clinical role.

Responsibilities of this individual include Onboarding/Orientation, Competency Management, Education, Role Development, Collaborative Partnerships, & Inquiry.

The primary outputs of the educator practice include learning, change, and professional role competence and growth.

Through collaboration with key stakeholders across the organization and ongoing environment scanning practices, the CareFlight Program Educator is accountable for compliance with applicable regulatory and best practice standards, institutional policies, procedures and supporting the organization in strategic outcome attainment established from strategic plans.

Essential Duties & Functions

Learning Facilitator

  • Creates a safe and effective learning environment through proficient use of adult learning principles, communication skills and teaching methods
  • Assesses for knowledge gaps, assists with the development and implementation of education/competency based on new processes, equipment, policies, regulatory requirements or learning needs assessment etc.
  • Collaborates with the leadership team to prioritize the learning/training needs of the unit
  • Assists with the development of educational programs using adult learning principles and instructional design
  • Serves as a clinical practice resource for staff
  • Teaches clinical/specialty education classes and performs skill validations at the department level

Partner for Practice Transition

  • Implements orientation and competency activities in consultation with NPD specialist and departmental leadership
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of education and orientation programs and offers input for updating, improving, and enhancing content and structure
  • Assists staff in transition to designated transport level
  • Collaborates with department leadership to identify appropriate preceptors
  • Partners with preceptors to provide clinical expertise and input to facilitate frequent learning/practice objectives
  • Coordinates and evaluates orientee clinical experiences, providing feedback to orientees, preceptors, and leadership as necessary

Change Agent

  • Promotes a culture of error prevention and patient safety
  • Collaborate with NPD Specialists as needed to recommend educational strategies for the implementation of clinical standards
  • Applies performance improvement processes to affect and actively transform clinical practice
  • Implement educational offerings to achieve successful change, improve patient outcomes, and increase employee engagement.
  • Evaluates the impact of improvement strategies, change effectiveness and outcomes, and collaborates with system NPD specialists and departmental leaders to implement necessary process/practice changes.
  • Maintains clear communication with leaders and others who are leading the change

Leader

  • Contributes to a positive and collaborative work environment

  • Functions as an education planner for continuing education offerings
  • Maintains records of educational activities
  • Seeks opportunities to develop personal knowledge and skills

  • Designs continuing education activities with input from content experts and organization leaders for a variety of professional clinical and non-clinical staff
  • Participates in committees as available and applicable to influence professional development strategies

Champion for inquiry

  • Evaluates literature and evidence-based practices to guide clinical practice and improve patient outcomes
  • Disseminates findings through educational programs and activities
  • Collaborates with Unit Council/System Councils/Quality and Research teams to identify strategies to improve unit performance and patient care goals
  • Participates in the development and implementation of standards of care, policies, and procedures

Mentor

  • Foster ongoing professional growth experiences for staff
  • Provides feedback, support, and professional development opportunities for preceptors at the unit level
  • Connects others to knowledge/resources within and external to nursing
  • Supports transition of nurses and paramedics across learning and practice environments

Education

Minimum Level of Education Required: Bachelor's degree

Licensure/Certification/Registration

  • Valid Ohio RN license
  • The following certifications are required at the time of hire:
  • Current BLS, ACLS, ITLS or PHTLS, PALS, NRP, ATLS (audit), CAMTS approved

Transport-specific certification

  • Specialty certification in education or professional development such as NPD certification, or specialty licensure within three years of hire

Experience

Minimum Level of Experience Required: 3 - 5 years of job related experience

Prior job title or occupational experience: Two years of CareFlight clinical experience
