Summary
This position assists Technology Processing Center (TPC) staff in Special Metals’ Technology department through routine hand mill metal conversion, mechanical testing, and metallographic analyses. The TPC Technician will assist with the Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) of small (50-300 lbs.) heats per internal or customer supplied compositions, and the development of new nickel alloys and production practices to meet increasingly demanding customer requirements in energy and aerospace markets.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
PHYSICAL DEMANDS – FREQUENTLY MOVES ABOUT THE PRODUCTION FACILITIES. MUST BE ABLE TO DETECT UNSAFE CONDITIONS FROM LONG DISTANCES. MUST BE CAPABLE OF ROUTINLY LIFTING 35-LBS. REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS MAY BE MADE TO ENABLE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES TO PERFORM THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS.

Essential Functions
- Perform laboratory tasks, including but not limited to cutting, machining, grinding, heat treating, and cleaning
- Witness mill production steps, collect and compile relevant production data.
- Perform basic weld repair and weldability studies with guidance from Welding Specialist.
- Work with a team to perform lab scale conversion of metal samples, including but not limited to small ingot casting, hot rolling, hot extrusion, and cold drawing.
- Submit and manage test requests and work orders.
- Perform basic data analysis and communicate results through Excel plots, presentations, and concise technical reports.
- Actively participate in department/Corporate related team activities (ERT, energy saving, 6S, quality, monthly safety training, and safety audits).
- Accomplishes all tasks as appropriate.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum: High School Graduate
- Some college a plus
- Ability to communicate to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
- Ability to write short reports and give internal oral presentations.
- Self-motivated and independent to accomplish overall project goals ethically, on time, and professionally with contextual guidance.
- Proficient with computers and basic software including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Ability to perform basic data analysis and graph results is a plus.
- Experience/exposure to welding preferred, but not required.
- Ability and willingness to learn and grow into a technical resource, leading his/her own projects.
