Mechanical Technician: Master the Controls of a State-of-the-Art Paper Mill!

 

SUMMARY

 

Join our dynamic Maintenance Team as a Mechanical Technician, providing essential reliability-centered maintenance support to our paper machine operations. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a high-performance work system, working a rotating 24/7 shift schedule that includes both day and shift assignments. All Mechanical Technicians are expected to experience both day and shift roles over time. You will report directly to the Mechanical Maintenance Superintendent.

SALARY COMPENSATION

 

Mechanical Technicians are Salaried Non-Exempt, qualifying for overtime beyond 40 hours per week.

  • Level 1: $58,000.00 base salary per year
  • Level 2: $60,000.00 base salary per year
  • Level 3: $62,000.00 base salary per year

    With built-in overtime and incentive potential, you have the opportunity to earn $90,000.00 annually.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

As a Mechanical Technician, your primary responsibility is to ensure the optimal reliability and uptime of our processes through preventive maintenance. You will be instrumental in:

  • Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnosing and repairing mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues in process equipment, including pumps, transmissions, and other components.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operating motorized equipment such as forklifts, scissor lifts, Genie lifts, hoists, and cranes.
  • Technical Proficiency: Applying safe working practices, understanding preventive and first-line maintenance principles, and interpreting blueprints, technical manuals, and literature.
  • Mechanical Expertise:
    • Diagnosing mechanical faults and planning effective solutions.
    • Understanding power transmission systems, including the removal, refitting, installation, and alignment of shafts, belts, chains, and couplings.
    • Correctly removing and refitting various bearing types, identifying applications, and recognizing defects.
    • Recognizing stripped threads and utilizing thread repair equipment.
    • Manufacturing gaskets, removing, and replacing seals and gland packing.
    • Understanding the operation of various gearboxes (helical, spur, and worm-wheel).
    • Dismantling and replacing drive belts.
    • Identifying conveyor systems and their components, including troubleshooting, removal, replacement, and tracking of conveyor belts.
  • Welding & Pipefitting: Employing appropriate welding processes (MIG, TIG, or Stick) and performing pipe fitting duties as needed.
  • Documentation: Reading orders and preparing legible and accurate reports.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Performing other tasks as assigned by Mill Management.

EDUCATION and/or REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

  • Post-secondary educational degree (2 to 4 year degree from college, university, technical school, military, vocational or other advanced educational institution).
  • Computer/Data entry skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, Pulp/Paper or Chemical Engineering.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blueprints, P&IDs, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to read a tape measure with speed and accuracy.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as percentages, measurement, volume, and rate.
  • Ability to apply concepts of high school math.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written, oral, or graphic instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Experience leading root cause analysis and problem-solving teams.
  • Strong analytical and field troubleshooting skills.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical machinery, including conveyor systems, breakers, boilers, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.
  • Proficiency in computer systems and the ability to learn new complex applications.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • May be required to maintain a current Lift Truck Operator License and/or other appropriate certification to work in certain areas or on certain equipment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

This role requires regular standing, walking, talking or hearing, and frequent use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; reaching with hands and arms; and stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Occasional sitting is also required. You must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

The work environment involves regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and frequent exposure to wet and/or humid conditions. Occasional exposure to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; and vibration may occur. The noise level in the work environment is typically loud.

 

ADDITIONAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & REQUIREMENTS

  • Practical application training may require some out-of-state travel to other Pratt Paper Mills.
  • Adherence to all required Personal Protective Equipment (glasses, ear plugs, shoes, gloves, etc.).
  • Successful completion of drug testing/screening, background checks, physical exam, and reference checks.
  • Demonstrated proven record of learning aptitude.
  • Participation in ongoing educational certificate training programs.
  • Commitment to maintaining good housekeeping, including washing up, sweeping, and shoveling debris.
  • Working knowledge of equipment design for process troubleshooting.
