Overview

JOB PURPOSE

The Instructional Designer is responsible for collaborating with subject matter experts and stakeholders to conceptualize, design, and develop highly interactive learning solutions (e-learning, instructor-led training, simulations, webinars, and blended solutions) that address business needs and improve performance of PPL employees. These solutions can address skills (mostly technical), compliance, and safety related instruction. The Instructional Designer is experienced with learning principles so they many analyze, design, develop, and evaluate instructional materials and programs. They must be able to communicate and collaborate with employees within the organization, demonstrating application of a systematic approach to training (SAT model, ADDIE model, etc.), needs analysis techniques, adult learning theory, and effective learning solutions.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Applies instructional design expertise to create learning solutions using various media such as CBT/WBT programming, video, sound, webinars, and classroom technology. Develops content, scripts, storyboards, and program flow for multimedia production.
  • Applies expertise in instructional systems design to develop interactive lessons within the classroom setting, utilizing various learning compression methodologies—including accelerated learning and participant-centered approaches—to optimise the educational experience.
  • Defines the necessary requirements, evaluation methods, and feedback processes for developing webinars, computerized tests, E-Learning modules, and highly interactive classroom lessons, as well as making recommendations for integrating technology into classroom settings.
  • Consults with instructors and experts to enhance the student experience through varied teaching methods.
  • Researches and makes recommendations on educational best practices, instructional resources, instructional technologies and multimedia hardware/software to support teaching and learning.
  • Performs tasks to ensure training development projects are completed by established deadlines.
  • Develop media-rich e-Learning modules and simulations using: Articulate 360, Vyond, Photoshop, Adobe Create Suite, Camtasia, Captivate (or other multi-media solutions). Produce webinars using Zoom, MS Teams or other emerging webinar platforms. Assess emerging learning technologies such as classroom apps for use at PPL.
  • Where appropriate, develop standards and guidance for tools.
  • Works with PPL's equivalent of an LMS to create and track courses.
  • All positions in which driving is an essential function of the job, regardless if the job code is marked safety sensitive or not, will also be included as safety sensitive.
  • May be assigned an Electric Utilities emergency and storm role. This is a special assignment that comes into play during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work after-hours, outside of your normal schedule.
  • The company reserves the right to determine if this position will be assigned to work on-site, remotely, or a combination of both. Assigned work location may change. In the case of remote work, physical presence in the office/on-site may be required to engage in face-to-face interaction and coordination of work among direct reports and co-workers.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and 2 years' experience in instructional design and course development or equivalent combination of education and experience on a year for year basis is required.
  • Knowledge of the adult and online learning principles
  • Strong verbal, presentation, and written communication skills
  • Flexible with technology and can learn new software and systems quickly and be adaptable to new methods
  • Self-starter, innovative and creative, excellent verbal, and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of programming e-learning with one or more e-learning programming tools


Senior Level Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in instructional design, education, technology, or related field and 5 years' experience in instructional design and course development or equivalent combination of education and experience on a year for year basis is required.

  • Position will be filled at the appropriate level commensurate to the candidate's education and experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • A degree in instructional design, education, technology, or related field
  • Experience with a CBT/WBT tool and an LMS
  • A multimedia and e-learning portfolio.
  • A master's degree in instructional design or related field.
  • Experience with Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, Lectora and Captivate.
