What are the responsibilities and job description for the Graphic Designer position at Poyant Signs?
Position Summary:
We are seeking a detail-oriented and mechanically minded Graphic Designer to join our in-house team. This role is ideal for a designer who excels in conceptual design and has the technical knowledge required to translate ideas into buildable, real-world solutions. While strong design sensibilities are essential, this position focuses more heavily on adaptation of brand standards and architectural guidelines into designs that align with our fabrication capabilities and production standards.
At our company, great design is about more than aesthetics — it's about how things are built. The ideal candidate will be comfortable moving between the creative and the practical, and possess the ability to read technical drawings, understand how products are constructed, and clearly communicate those requirements across departments.
This is a fast-paced, high-volume, and ever-changing environment. Strong math skills, mechanical understanding, and the ability to read a tape measure and visualize scale and dimensions are crucial. We're looking for someone who can take ownership, adapt quickly, and contribute confidently under pressure — not just with ideas, but with actionable, buildable results.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop brand-aligned, technically sound designs that support client goals while meeting our fabrication and installation standards.
- Produce scaled technical drawings, visual presentations, and production artwork for both internal fabrication teams and external vendors.
- Translate conceptual direction and brand assets into clear, feasible design documentation.
- Specify all materials, dimensions, construction methods, and mounting details clearly and accurately.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, fabricators, and installers to ensure feasibility and consistency throughout the project lifecycle.
- Participate in project kick-off and job review meetings to align design intent with field conditions and installation requirements.
- Maintain project documentation and version control throughout the design process.
- Adjust designs based on client feedback, field surveys, or fabrication constraints — while keeping deadlines and budgets in mind.
- Support compliance with ADA signage requirements, local building codes, and other regulatory considerations.
- Communicate design solutions clearly to both creative and technical teams.
- Take initiative in identifying and addressing potential issues early in the design process.
- Work under tight deadlines and shifting priorities without sacrificing quality or attention to detail.
Core Competencies:
- Technical Fluency: Understanding of signage fabrication, construction techniques, and materials.
- Detail-Oriented Execution: Ability to create precise, legible, and complete documentation for production.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to understand how things go together — including reading a tape measure, visualizing construction, and considering durability and safety.
- Mathematical Competency: Strong working knowledge of dimensions, scaling, and basic calculations.
- Adaptability: Thrives in a deadline-driven environment with frequent changes and multiple active projects.
- Collaborative Communication: Works effectively across teams and departments, both verbal and written.
- Ownership & Accountability: Takes initiative and follows through — from first concept to final product.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Environmental Design, or a related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in signage, architectural graphics, or construction-focused design roles.
- Strong portfolio demonstrating practical, buildable design work with clear technical documentation.
- Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD tools.
- Experience on both Mac and PC platforms.
- Fluency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to read blueprints, understand site plans, and reference engineering standards.
- Excellent communication, time management, and file organization skills.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements:
- Primarily in-office with possible 1-day hybrid flexibility after onboarding.
- Ability to sit and work at a computer for extended periods.
- Occasional visits to production or installation sites.
- Must be able to lift and handle presentation materials or samples as needed.
