Reports to: Building Principal and PALS Coordinator
PART-TIME: Hours to be determined by school. $16.00/hour
Summary
The PALS instructional assistant assists the classroom teacher by working with small groups and with individual students in the area of Language Arts. At the Kindergarten level the assistant focuses primarily on phonological awareness to help build the foundation skills necessary for eventual success in learning to read.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
- Provides small group reading instruction to students in grades K, 1, 2, or 3 under the supervision of the reading specialist and classroom teacher. This instruction reinforces skills previously taught by the teacher.
- Confers on a regular basis with classroom teachers to plan instructional activities and to discuss student performance.
- Communicates clearly and effectively using language that is grammatically correct both orally and in writing.
- Participates in in-service training programs as provided.
- Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information regarding students.
- Performs any other duties that may be assigned by the Superintendent, or designee.
Qualifications
All PALS paraprofessionals must have a secondary school diploma or its recognized equivalent. They should have previous experience with groups of children. They should have good physical and emotional health.
Language Skills
Ability to communicate in a clear, concise manner both orally and in written form.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to understand directions given orally and in writing; able to read and comprehend written material.
Physical Demands
Performance of limited physical tasks such as bending, lifting, distributing material/items, and using office equipment as needed in area of assignment.
Work Environment
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, teachers, principals, and other school personnel.
Evaluation
Job performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of School Board Policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of classified personnel.
