Headquartered in Houston, Texas, we deliver high-quality electrical and mechanical contracting services across the United States. We prioritize excellence, innovation, safety, and strong client relationships in every project.

Position Summary

PowerPlus Companies is experiencing significant growth and is undergoing a strategic restructuring to support continued expansion. We are adding a new Controller position to strengthen our corporate finance team. The Controller will lead the company’s financial operations with a strong emphasis on proactive cash management and precise job cost coding to drive profitability and support scaling operations. This role demands expertise in construction accounting, including detailed cost coding for jobs, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, and robust cash flow oversight. The Controller will also be instrumental in leading the transition from Sage 300 to Sage Intacct, including full implementation and deployment. Reporting directly to the CFO or EVP-Corporate Finance, this position will manage a distributed accounting team of 20-25 professionals (with 2-3 team members based in our Florida office) and partner closely with project managers, operations, and executive leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Direct all accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, general ledger, job costing, and financial closing processes.
  • Oversee and enforce accurate job cost coding across all projects, ensuring proper allocation of labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and overhead to individual jobs.
  • Manage proactive cash flow forecasting, monitoring, and optimization, including aggressive A/R collections, strategic A/P timing, lien waiver management, and banking relationships to maintain strong liquidity during growth.
  • Oversee construction-specific accounting, including percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, WIP schedules, change orders, cost-to-complete estimates, and project profitability analysis.
  • Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and variance reports with a focus on cash position and job-level performance.
  • Lead the Sage Intacct ERP implementation, including system configuration, data migration, process optimization (particularly for job costing and cash management), and user training.
  • Establish and maintain robust internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard assets and ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and industry standards.
  • Coordinate external audits, tax filings, surety bonding, and banking relationships.
  • Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support bidding, project decisions, cash deployment, and overall company strategy.
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop a distributed accounting team of 20-25 professionals, building capacity to support company growth with emphasis on accurate cost coding and cash discipline.
  • Collaborate with project managers on contract billing (e.g., AIA), cost-to-complete estimates, and subcontractor management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 5 years in a Controller or senior finance role within the construction or specialty contracting industry.
  • Proven ability in construction job cost accounting, including detailed cost coding, percentage-of-completion revenue recognition, WIP reporting, and multi-state operations.
  • Demonstrated strength in cash management within a construction environment, including forecasting, collections, disbursements, and maintaining liquidity during project cycles and growth phases.
  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems, specifically Sage 300 and/or Sage Intacct; demonstrated success in leading ERP implementations required.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial modeling; experience with Procore or similar construction management software is advantageous.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills to effectively manage a larger, distributed team and influence cross-functional stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Buy-side M&A experience, including financial due diligence, integration planning, and post-acquisition financial management.
  • Electrical/Mechanical experience highly desired.
