Overview
PowerPhotonic is a global leader in precision micro-optics for laser applications, with headquarters in the United Kingdom and a U.S. subsidiary based in Tucson, Arizona We design and manufacture complex freeform optics and assemblies that enhance the performance and reliability of laser systems for demanding sectors including defense, aerospace, and industrial markets.
We are seeking an Opto-Mechanical Design Engineer to join our growing US team. In this pivotal role, you will lead the concept development, detailed design, prototyping, and production readiness of opto-mechanical assemblies for both defense and commercial applications. You’ll collaborate closely with optical engineers, customers, sales, production and supply chain in both the US and the UK, to deliver robust design solutions and support new product introduction. This role requires working within ITAR-controlled environments and ensuring compliance with US export control regulations.
Key Responsibilities
- Opto-Mechanical Design: Develop concept, detailed, and production-ready designs for assemblies compliant with defense standards. Produce 3D models and 2D drawings in SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor, ensuring compliance with internal and ITAR standards.
- Prototyping & Production Readiness: Lead prototyping builds, support assembly process development, and define manufacturing processes. Interface with vendors to ensure production readiness.
- Project Management: Manage project tasks, schedules, and deliverables to tight timescales. Coordinate engineering activities across the US and UK while maintaining export control boundaries.
- Design Control: Maintain robust drawing control, revision management, and change control aligned with ITAR requirements. Ensure designs meet KPIs for quality, cost, and schedule.
- Collaboration: Work cross-functionally with customers, suppliers, and internal teams. Act as the technical interface for opto-mechanical designs, supporting sales and bid processes.
Your Profile
- Must be a U.S. person (citizen or green card holder)
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
- Strong experience (3 years) in mechanical design, experience in opto-mechanical design and/or high-precision applications strongly preferred.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks (or other CAD software) and engineering documentation practices.
- Experience with product development, prototyping, design for manufacture and assembly, and transferring designs and approaches to a production team.
- Experience with engineering change management preferred.
- Ability to manage projects and deliver to tight deadlines.
- Strong communication skills for cross-functional and customer-facing interactions.
- Ability to work autonomously and within international teams.
- Cost-conscious, with experience driving standardization and design efficiency.
- Experience supporting sales and bid processes.
