What are the responsibilities and job description for the Joint Trench Designer position at Power Systems Design Group?
Joint Trench Designer (In-Person, Walnut Creek, CA)
Your Blueprint to Impact, at Power Systems Design Group
At Power Systems Design Group, we don't just draw trenches - we lay the groundwork for the next wave of infrastructure in Northern California. If you've ever looked at an overhead or underground powerline or trench substructure route and thought "someone designed that," this is your chance to be that someone.
As our Joint Trench Designer, you'll be based in our Walnut Creek office, working on-site with a nimble, highly-experienced team that brings big-firm expertise in a small-firm culture.
This is an in-person role - no remote substitute. We believe the best coordination and learning environment happens side-by-side, and for the projects we own, your local presence matters.
Your Role & What You'll Own
Lead the design and drafting of dry utility joint-trench systems (electric, gas, telecom, street lighting) using AutoCAD - transforming concept into construction-ready plans.
Serve as the utility-interface specialist: coordinate with PG&E, LID, MID, AMP, SFPUC, Comcast, AT&T and other providers, distill their standards into your designs, and secure approvals.
Manage multiple concurrent design packages - ensure accuracy, check conflicts, meet deliverable schedules.
Collaborate across teams: work with project managers, civil engineers, CAD drafters, and developer partners to integrate your trench design work into the overall site plan.
Support the utility approvals journey: respond to utility plan-check comments, revise drawings, and help keep approvals moving so construction isn't delayed.
Support the city permitting journey: respond to city plan-check comments, revise drawings, and help keep approvals moving so permitting isn't delayed.
What We're Looking For
3 years of utility design or civil-drafting experience, preferably with joint-trench layout.
Proficiency in AutoCAD LT, and a strong understanding of utility standards in California (PG&E preferred).
A degree or schooling in Engineering, Drafting or similar preferred or equivalent experience. Certifications such as EIT are a plus.
Exceptional attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to juggle multiple assignments while maintaining quality.
Local availability: Must work on-site full-time at our Walnut Creek office (commute accordingly).
If you feel you have the drive and motivation to be an exceptional team member please reach out even if you don't meet the above criteria. We enjoy meeting new people and there could be a position for you here.
