The Operations Team Manager is critical to store operations, and oversees a team of Operations Managers to carry out the day-to-day functions of the Burnside store in the areas of safety, loss prevention, security, and customer service. Pay: $25.49 per hour or more, depending on experience.
Schedule: The schedule for this position is to be determined, but may include a mix of opening, mid, and closing shifts, and will likely include at least one weekend day. This position is Full-time/Exempt/Salaried.

Position Summary:
The Operations Team Manager (OTM) is responsible for implementing strategies and initiatives that support the operational, safety, security, and customer service goals of the company. With the Senior Operations Manager, the OTM leads a team of Operations Managers to carry out the day-to-day functions of the store. The OTM contributes to the development of a culture that emphasizes exceptional customer service, continuous operational improvement, and high performance of all staff and management team members. With the Burnside Leadership Team, the OTM shares responsibility for the financial success of the store, implementing and furthering the company’s vision, and strengthening the company’s reputation as an amazing bookselling institution. Goals, objectives, and significant business decisions are approved by the Burnside Store Manager. This position reports to the Burnside Store Manager.
Essential Functions:
- Oversees store operations including, but not limited to, Manager on Duty shifts, cashiering, customer service, safety, loss prevention, supplies, and store tours.
- Coordinates with Facilities Operations Manager to execute general space-planning and repair projects and ensure safe operation of Burnside location.
- Oversees Operations and Customer Service Lead teams.
- Works closely with the Corporate Loss Prevention Manager (CLPM) to recommend, develop and implement loss prevention and security policies, procedures, and best practices. Serves as backup to CLPM.
- Coordinates the Manager on Duty (MOD) program and scheduling; coordinates MOD efforts to ensure the smooth and safe operation of the sales floor, excellent customer service, efficient and discreet incident response and reporting.
- Oversees the training of the Operations Team and other managers and staff on incident response and reporting; provides ongoing coaching, training, and feedback.
- Demonstrates an exemplary level of proactive and engaged customer service, and holds others accountable for meeting and exceeding Powell’s Customer Service Expectations. Implements and executes projects, procedures and standards.
- Provides leadership and guidance to direct reports and others on the management team. Holds team accountable to their areas of supervision.
- Establishes clear performance objectives and expectations. Delegates, directs, and monitors work.
- Maintains high professional and performance standards. Inspires growth in self and others through coaching, training, and continuous professional improvement.
- Challenges and inspires others to achieve a high level of performance through feedback, mentoring and acknowledging accomplishments. Counsels and coaches other managers and employees.
- Participates in hiring, training, mentoring staff, and conducting performance evaluations.
- Initiates and follows-through with in-the-moment and problem-solving conversations, performance management, and progressive discipline as needed.
- Works cooperatively with members of the Burnside Leadership Team to set and communicate store goals and to oversee smooth running of all aspects of the store.
- Acts as primary point-of-contact for outside vendors and in-house partners connected with the Burnside location.
- Serves on committees and leads meetings and projects as needed.
- Performs other duties as required.
Requirements/Qualifications:
- Demonstrated experience managing a large complex department or store, or minimum three years’ management experience within Powell’s.
- Demonstrated safety and security experience, and the ability to confidently assume a leadership role in emergency situations.
- Superior customer service skills.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills.
- Proficient computer skills. Must include Excel and demonstrated database skills. Adept at learning new technologies.
- Excellent prioritization skills and demonstrated ability to meet deadlines.
