Fire Safety Plan Reviewer OR Fire Safety Inspector/Plan Reviewer (depending on experience)

  • Salary: Fire Safety Plan Reviewer $77,304.00-$85,759.25
  • Salary: Fire Safety Inspector/Plan Reviewer $85,035.00-$93,122.00


PFA is hiring one position; the selected candidate will be hired as either a Fire Safety Plan Reviewer OR Fire Safety Inspector/Plan Reviewer (depending on experience).


The positions have similar but different credentials/requirements which are listed separately below.

 

CLOSING:

First review of applications will be on 6/1/2026, then biweekly until filled.

WORK SCHEDULE

FLSA/Classification: Non-exempt / Classified

Work Schedule: Monday-Thursday 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday 7:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. (on site). Occasional on-call shifts are required for either position.

 

SUMMARY: Fire Safety Plan Reviewer

This position is responsible for the technical review and approval of development, construction, and life safety system plans to ensure compliance with adopted fire codes, standards, regulations, and policies. The role provides guidance to design professionals, contractors, business owners, the public, and partner agency staff regarding fire code requirements and compliance. Responsibilities include clearly communicating review findings through detailed and accurate documentation. This position operates within the Technical Services Program and supports the Fire Prevention and Community Risk Reduction (FPCRR) Division.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Review permit applications for site development, new construction, and tenant improvement projects to ensure compliance with fire and life safety requirements.

• Collaborate with internal departments, architects, engineers, contractors, and developers to identify required fire protection features and resolve life safety deficiencies.

•Read and interpret building and fire codes, construction plans, specifications, maps, technical manuals, and engineering software outputs.

• Conduct research on alternative materials, construction methods, and equipment to determine compliance with applicable codes and standards.

• Regulatory Collaboration — Work with regulatory agencies and design teams to support the development of code-compliant project designs.

• Prepare plan review comments and deficiency reports; identify noncompliance issues and recommend corrective actions.

• Compile plans, reports, and supporting documentation required for permit issuance.

• Meet with contractors, design professionals, and partner agencies to explain code requirements and organizational standards and policies.

• Participate in pre-construction meetings with staff and contractors as assigned.

• Coordinate information across internal teams to ensure consistent communication and enforcement of fire and life safety codes.

• Attend training and professional development programs to maintain required certifications and technical skills.

• Develop training curricula and provide classroom and field instruction to employees.

• Maintain accurate records and prepare technical reports, correspondence, and documentation.

• Identify opportunities to improve development review and permitting processes for customers and staff.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

Required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout employment with PFA.

• Associates degree or higher in fire science, construction management, or related field.

• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

• 3 years of experience in plan review, building inspections, fire inspections or construction.

• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

• Valid driver’s license

• International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector I

• Obtain within six months of hire:

  • HeartSaver CPR certification

• Obtain within 1 year of hire:

  • International Code Council (ICC) Fire Inspector II


SUMMARY: Fire Safety Inspector/Plan Reviewer

This position performs advanced technical and administrative work related to fire and life safety code compliance. Responsibilities include reviewing development and construction plans, fire protection system designs, shop drawings, and related documentation to ensure compliance with adopted fire codes, standards, regulations, and policies. The role also assists with and conducts inspections of buildings and fire and life safety systems to verify installations and construction align with approved plans and

applicable requirements.


Additional duties include conducting technical research; interpreting and applying fire code

requirements; and providing guidance to design professionals, contractors, business

owners, the public, and multi-jurisdictional staff regarding fire and life safety compliance.


The position prepares detailed and accurate documentation of findings, recommendations, and compliance determinations. This role operates as part of the Technical Services Program within the Fire Prevention and Community Risk Reduction (FPCRR) Division.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Analyze and interpret complex fire and life safety construction documents, including fire protection systems, hazardous materials, and high-piled storage, to verify compliance with adopted codes and NFPA standards.

• Provide code interpretations and technical assistance to architects, engineers, and contractors; recommend revisions needed to achieve compliance with applicable regulations.

• Communicate fire department requirements to the building division, planning department, public works, and utility partners to support coordinated project review.

• Offer technical expertise to operational personnel and assist with resolving code-related issues encountered in the field.

• Conduct research on alternative materials, construction methods, and equipment to determine compliance with fire and building safety standards.

• Review plans, reports, and calculations to identify non-compliant or incomplete information and request necessary corrections.

• Prepare clear, detailed plan review comment letters outlining design or installation deficiencies for design professionals and contractors.

• Prepare and process documentation required for the issuance of fire-related permits.

• Attend training, conferences, and certification programs to maintain required competencies and stay current with evolving codes and standards.

• Coordinate information across internal teams to ensure consistent communication and enforcement of fire and life safety codes.

• Develop training curricula and deliver classroom and field instruction to fire department personnel on plan review, code application, and inspection practices.

• Maintain accurate records and prepare technical reports, correspondence, and documentation.

• Identify opportunities to improve development review and permitting processes for customers and staff.

• Inspection-Related Duties

  • Active construction site inspections confirming jobsite safety, fire access, and consistency between plans and construction.
  • Building and tenant finish construction inspections.
  • Conducts specialized acceptance testing on fire safety systems including fire suppression, fire detection systems, and other technical systems that require advanced knowledge.
  • Knox Box lock up.

• Rotational on-call schedule.

• Perform other related duties as assigned.

• Alternative certifications such as NICET, NFPA, or state approved fire marshal programs, fire protection systems certifications from within industry, or similar, may be considered.
