Department: Post Metal Recycling
Area: Shop & Metal Recycling Yard
Employment Status: Full-Time. Monday-Friday 7:00AM-5:00PM (flexible)

Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated, self-starting, and reliable individual to join our team as a Heavy Equipment Repair Technician. This position will work primarily out of the shop while directly supporting Post Metal Recycling equipment and scrap yard machinery. The Heavy Equipment Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and rebuilding equipment such as excavators, LaBounty attachments, semi-trucks, iron balers, shears, forklifts, material handlers, and other recycling machinery. The ideal candidate will have strong diesel mechanic experience and a solid background in heavy equipment repair, including mechanical, hydraulic, electrical/electronic, and engine systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair heavy equipment and scrap yard machinery to ensure it remains safe and operational.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, hydraulic, electrical/electronic, and engine issues.
  • Perform routine service, preventative maintenance, component rebuilds, oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, greasing, and general inspections.
  • Use diagnostic tools, service manuals, software, schematics, and technical resources to identify and resolve equipment issues.
  • Identify potential warranty-related repairs and assist with required documentation, parts information, and communication with vendors or manufacturers when applicable.
  • Perform welding and fabrication as needed.
  • Train and assist operators with routine care, inspections, and daily maintenance of machines.
  • Identify equipment performance or control issues and coordinate needed repairs with the Post Metal Recycling General Manager and Post Equipment Shop Manager.
  • Order or request necessary parts, supplies, and materials.
  • Complete service documentation, maintenance logs, repair records, and parts information accurately.
  • Work with technical support teams, vendors, or outside resources to resolve complex equipment issues.
  • Operate tools, forklifts, man-lifts, and heavy equipment as needed for repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Follow all company safety procedures, including proper PPE and safe work practices around heavy equipment and scrap yard operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Experience repairing and servicing heavy equipment is required.
  • Experience with recycling machinery preferred.
  • Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • CDL preferred, but not required.
  • Basic computer skills required for service documentation, parts lookup, diagnostic software, and communication.
  • Willing to work overtime or adjust schedule when needed to support equipment breakdowns, repairs, or operational needs.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical/electronic, and engine systems.
  • Skilled in diagnosing and troubleshooting equipment issues.
  • Comfortable using hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and trade-related tools.
  • Able to work independently while following safety procedures.
  • Capable of prioritizing repairs based on equipment needs, safety concerns, and operational downtime.
  • Good communication skills, including explaining repair needs or concerns clearly.
  • Safety-minded and willing to help where needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to lift, carry, and move approximately 50–75 pounds.
  • Must be able to climb on, around, and under equipment to inspect, grease, clean, and repair components.
  • Requires standing, bending, kneeling, squatting, reaching, pushing, pulling, and working in various positions.
  • Work may involve exposure to dirt, grease, noise, dust, weather, scrap materials, moving equipment, and heavy machinery.

SALARY & BENEFITS:

  • Competitive hourly pay, based on experience and skill level. We are willing to exceed the posted pay range for the right individual with strong heavy equipment repair experience and proven technical skills.

Pay: $30.00 - $38.00 per hour

Expected hours: No less than 45.0 per week
