Business Administrator (Director of Finance and Operations)
Position Purpose
The Portsmouth School Department is seeking a strategic and collaborative Business Administrator to lead the financial and operational systems of a high-performing coastal New Hampshire school district.
Serving approximately 2,400 students across five schools, the district operates an annual budget of $67,174,740 and benefits from strong community support for public education.
The Business Administrator works closely with the Superintendent and School Board as a key member of the district leadership team, guiding financial strategy and operational sustainability.
This position oversees the financial and operational systems that support the daily functioning of Portsmouth schools.
The next Business Administrator will play an important role in helping the district navigate long-term financial planning, operational sustainability, and strategic investments that support the educational priorities of the Portsmouth School Department.
Key Responsibilities
The Business Administrator provides leadership and oversight for the district's financial and operational systems, including:
• Budget development, financial planning, and fiscal reporting
• Accounting systems, purchasing, and financial controls
• Payroll, employee benefits administration, and insurance programs
• Facilities operations and capital planning support
• Transportation and food service programs
• Contract management and vendor relations
• Compliance with state, federal, and local financial regulations
The Business Administrator serves as a key advisor to the Superintendent and School Board on financial matters and supports long-range operational planning.
Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or related field
• Significant experience in financial management, budgeting, and organizational operations
• Experience in municipal or public sector finance strongly encouraged
• Demonstrated ability to manage complex budgets and financial systems
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
