PORTSMOUTH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT JOB DESCRIPTIONTITLE: Grade K Elementary General Education Teacher REPORTS TO: Building Administrator DIRECTLY SUPERVISES: N / A(SUMMARY) JOB DESCRIPTION: Under direction of the school principal and/or appropriate supervisor, plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provides an atmosphere and environment conductive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervises students in a variety of school-related settings. Monitors and evaluates student outcomes.

Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community. Develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintains appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelors Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. In accordance with Rhode Islands Right to Read Act, all educators must demonstrate awareness of and/or proficiency in the Science of Reading. All qualified candidates will have completed an approved Right to Read training program or possess current certification of proficiency or awareness (out-of-state teachers may be granted one year from their date of hire to complete the required training). Awareness Certification requries 10-hours of training, which can be completed online, and free-of-charge on BRIDGE-RI.

For positions requiring Proficiency, more intensive coursework is required. Educators can achieve this by completing state-approved certificate/degree programs (e.g., reading specialist certification or a related Master's degree). Upon successful completion of approved proficiency training, educators can apply for a free Literacy/Dyslexia Endorsement to add to their teaching certificate. CERTIFICATE / LICENSE REQUIRED: Certificate required by the Rhode Island State Department of Education.

Current Rhode Island Teacher Certificates in the appropriate subject area and level. Early Childhood PK-3 or Elementary Grades K-6 Certificate is required. Additional certification in Grades K-8, Special Education, and/or Reading Specialist is not required, but considered optional. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND CURRICULAR LINKAGES: 1.

Creates a classroom environment that provides for student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve learning objectives2. Participates in and implements district and school-based professional development activities3. Plans and conducts activities for a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and work time that provides students with opportunities to learn, observe, question, and investigate in alignment with appropriate State and local standards4. Instructs students individually and in groups using various teaching methods such as workshop model, discussions and demonstrations5.

Adapts teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students varying needs and interests6. Takes all necessary safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities7. Develops and maintains positive and cooperative interactions and communications with parents, colleagues and community8. Monitors and assesses student progress and adjusts student instruction accordingly9.

Makes recommendations about appropriate accommodations for all types of formal assessments10. Establishes and maintains standards of students behavior needed to achieve a positive learning environment in the classroom11. Adheres to the Rhode Island Educator Code of Professional Responsibility12. Works collaboratively with peers at the school and district level to improve teaching, learning and educational programming for students13.

Work at a desk, conference table, small student classroom table, or in meetings in various configurations 9. Position self to be able to retrieve items overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally10.
