Upward Bound -Teacher English

Upward Bound Summer Program Instructor - English

Staff: English: $35 per hour 

Hours: 9am - 1pm (Monday - Thursday)

Dates: June 9-July 21,2026 

Location: Tidewater Community College Building E

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Teach classes to high school participants as part of Upward Bound summer program
• Revise and/or create subject specific curriculum aligned with UB's academic summer program theme
• Select materials for themed designed courses based on UB staff recommendations
• Develop and submit lesson and assessment plans
• Deliver courses geared towards generating excitement for learning, as well as developing concrete academic skills in UB participants
• Provide course content in a manner that helps UB participants to have a head start on their Fall 2023 course work
• Monitor, record and report students' performance on a weekly basis
• Provide appropriate classroom management for 9th-11th graders
• Maintain student records in a secure and confidential manner
• Complete formative and summative evaluations for each student in class(es)
• Attend UB staff orientations, weekly meetings and post-summer meeting(s)
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

(1) Current Portsmouth Public Schools teacher or Virginia certified teacher
with Bachelor's degree in an academic course that individual will be tutoring;

(2) Proven knowledge of academic course that individual will be teaching;

(3) Knowledge of and/or experience working with high school students; and

(4) Preference given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming economic, social and academic barriers similar to the students.
