Position Title: Performing Arts Support Staff Reports To: Coordinators of Performing Arts, Portsmouth Public Schools
(Accompanists, Technicians, Coaches, Clinicians, Adjudicators, Stage Crew,
Videographers – Elementary & Secondary)
Position Type: Part-Time / Hourly, As-Needed Compensation: Hourly rate of $25 per hour or project-based stipend,
(Per Event, Rehearsal Cycle, or Seasonal Engagement) based on role, experience, and available funding
Position Summary:
The Performing Arts Support Staff position is a flexible and essential role within Portsmouth
Public Schools; (PPS) performing arts ecosystem. Staff in this role provide specialized
assistance across elementary and secondary schools, helping deliver high-quality instruction
and performance experiences in music, theatre, and dance. These individuals may serve in one
or more specialized capacities such as piano accompanist, audio-visual technician, coach,
clinician, adjudicator, stage crew, or videographer/ photographer for concerts, musicals,
showcases, assessments, and community events.
This position enables schools to execute polished performances while expanding student
access to technical and artistic expertise.
Key Areas of Support (May Include One or More of the Following):
1. Accompaniment (Music)
- Provide piano accompaniment for choral, instrumental, or dance classes and rehearsals
- Accompany student performances for concerts, assessments, or auditions
- Collaborate with music instructors to rehearse repertoire, warm-ups, and transitions
2. Technical Support (Sound & Lighting)
- Set up, test, and operate soundboards, microphones, audio recording/ mixing, lighting consoles, and playback systems for rehearsals and performances
- Assist with troubleshooting and technical direction for school shows, assemblies, and events
- Maintain and store equipment in working order; notify staff of any maintenance needs
3. Artistic Coaching (Theatre, Dance, Music)
- Serve as a sectional or choreographic coach for student performers in musicals, ensembles, or competition groups
- Support blocking, movement, diction, or character development in school theatre productions
- Assist dance instructors with technique, warmups, or rehearsal transitions
4. Stage Crew and Event Support
- Assist with load-in, setup, and breakdown of risers, props, staging, and instruments
- Support stage management and backstage supervision during rehearsals and live events
- Ensure safety protocols and performance logistics are executed smoothly
5. Videography and Media Production
- Film performances, concerts, or rehearsals using HD cameras or mobile rigs
- Edit footage for archival purposes, social media, or promotional content
- Coordinate with performing arts staff and the PPS Communications Team for official
releases
General Responsibilities:
- Communicate effectively with performing arts teachers and the Coordinator of
Secondary Performing Arts
- Arrive on time and prepared for scheduled assignments
- Maintain professionalism, discretion, and positive student interaction at all times
- Support a culture of inclusion, excellence, and creativity in all PPS performing arts spaces
- Ensure adherence to school and district policies related to student safety, equipment use, and event management
Qualifications Required:
- Demonstrated proficiency in chosen support area (instrumental, technical, or coaching role)
- Experience working with school-age students in instructional or production settings
- Strong communication, punctuality, and organizational skills
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekend
- Preferred:
- Degree or coursework in Music, Theatre, Dance, Media Production, or related field
- Previous experience in school, church, or professional performing arts environments
- Familiarity with public school operations and performance spaces
- Knowledge of culturally responsive arts practices and working with diverse student
populations
Schedule and Location:
- Work is assigned on an as-needed basis according to concert schedules, musicals, rehearsals, or instructional projects
- Locations vary across elementary and secondary schools within Portsmouth Public Schools
- Occasional off-site community performances or weekend commitments may be required
Term of Employment:
- Seasonal/annual appointment, renewable based on performance, scheduling needs, and
available funding
- Subject to background check and school board approval
