TITLE: Special Education Ed Tech III, Beach Program (Self-Contained ASD) – Multiple Openings at Ocean Ave Elementary

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Portland Public Schools dedicated Special Education Ed Tech III / Behavioral Health Professional to support students in our Beach Program at Ocean Avenue Elementary School. With the supervision of the Director of Specialized Programs and School Principal, the Ed Tech / BHP assists the Special Education Teacher by performing a variety of tasks that promote student learning, positive behavioral interventions and safety. Responsibilities involve working with students with behavioral and neuro-developmental disabilities, individually and in small groups to assess performance, reinforcing instruction, motivating learning, assisting with classroom management, data tracking, Mainecare billing documentation, and non-instructional duties.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides specially designed instruction (defined as instructional activities designed to address deficits related to a student's disability) to students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs)
  • Implements lesson plans and follows schedules created by the special education teacher or appropriate related service provider
  • Introduces new learning that is pre planned in consultation with the special education teacher or appropriate related service provider
  • Performs short-term instruction in small classes or in community-based programs
  • Implements Positive Support Plans (PSPs), Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Individual Treatment Plans (ITPs)
  • Maintains related, planned data collection
  • Helps maintain order and assists in managing the behavior of students, including crisis intervention
  • Participates in crisis intervention training and utilizes de-escalation techniques and therapeutic interventions, as appropriate
  • Consults with special education teachers on a regular basis (at least on a twice monthly basis) regarding educational needs, accommodations, and modifications
  • Helps to implement follow-up activities/supports from related service providers, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and social workers
  • Monitors students engaged in independent work or similar activities while the teacher is otherwise occupied
  • Provides information to assist the teacher in the evaluation of the learning process, behavior management programs, and individual student needs and progress, and recommends appropriate action
  • Continue planned instructional activities during the teacher's temporary absence from the classroom
  • Supervises students between classrooms, during lunch period and recess, and during playground activities; eats lunch with students, and provides physical and instructional assistance including but not limited to feeding/toileting/medical support, etc., as needed
  • Assists in the supervision of students while being transported on buses (for field trips) and during the loading and unloading of buses
  • Performs clerical and non-instructional duties such as recording and tracking data, distributing books and supplies, maintaining files/records of data as directed by case manager, and photocopying instructional materials; however, such duties comprise a clear minority of the work hours
  • Attends meetings, professional development, and in-service training, as required
  • Maintains FERPA and respects the confidentiality of all student and staff information
  • Maintains ethical behavior
  • Performs other duties, as assigned

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules and procedure manuals
  • Basic numeracy skills
  • Ability to interact with staff, students, parents, and others in an open, friendly, business-like manner

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Approval as an Educational Technician III by the Maine Department of Education; in the alternative, Maine provisional or professional teacher certification
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a college degree that includes nine credit hours related to an education field, such as behavior management or classroom strategies, and to candidates who have at least one year of experience working with students in structured situations

 

CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Maine State Educational Technician III (023) authorization (more info)
  • Maine State CHRC authorization (more info) **
    • ** If you already have an Ed Tech certification, the CHRC is not required separate as it is included in your Ed Tech cert
  • CPI certification (or ability to be certified) preferred
  • BHP certification preferred

 

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

  • Schedule: School Year, Full Time (1.0 FTE)
  • Assignment: Permanent
  • Reports to: School Principal
  • Contract: Part of Ed Tech union (see 2024-2027 CBA here)
  • Salary: Based on experience, as outlined in CBA

Ocean Avenue Elementary School is proud to be Maine's first International Baccalaureate IB WORLD SCHOOL offering the Primary Years Program (IB PYP). The IB PYP inquiry-driven learning model was adopted by Ocean Ave School as part of its school-improvement long-range plan, after input from teachers, parents and administrators. We are working with full commitment to build the program into the fabric of the curriculum school-wide with the six concept-based trans-disciplinary Units of Inquiry at each grade level. In addition, we are exploring and practicing "internationally-minded" character traits across the school community with the IB Learner Profile and IB attitudes.
