TITLE: Long-Term Substitute ESOL Teacher (April-June 2026) - Talbot Community School

 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Portland Public Schools is seeking a skilled ESOL teacher at Talbot for the remainder of the 2025-2026 school year (approx. dates of coverage: April 27-June 22). This teacher will be instrumental in providing targeted multilingual instruction and intervention, analyzing data and using progress monitoring tools and building relationships.  A key component of this role is communicating and collaborating with classroom teachers sharing goals, progress monitoring updates and celebrating progress. 

Provide and support rigorous and appropriate instruction aligned with the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards and the Common Core to meet grade level expectations for ESOL students, including newcomers:

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to enhance acquisition of English in all language domains necessary to make progress in general education content classes
  • Use data to inform instruction and programming supports for ESOL students
  • Leverage knowledge and experience with the cultures and languages of our students and families
  • Build relationships with multilingual families
  • Participate in staff development as applicable

 

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE FOR BOTH POSITIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university; Master's degree preferred
  • Successful track record as a teacher and/or interventionist
  • [Preferred] Experience with Illustrative Mathematics Curriculum, Building Fact Fluency, other research-based curricula, CKLA, Expeditionary Learning

 

CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info)
  • Maine State Teacher Certificate with 660 Endorsement (English Language Learner, PK-12) (more info)

 

EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

  • Assignment: Temporary (approx. dates of coverage: April 27-June 22)
  • Schedule: Full time, 1.0 FTE
  • Wage: $36.43 / hour (certification is *required* for this rate)

Gerald E. Talbot Community School is a Pre-K through Grade 5 school of nearly 400 students named in honor of Gerald E. Talbot, one of the most cherished and respected community leaders in Portland, ME. We are proud of our diverse population of learners from around the world, who speak 23 different languages. Talbot is a Title I school and is also recognized by the MDOE as a community school, which means we focus on meeting not only the academic needs of our students but also their broader developmental needs, including ensuring their physical and mental health, promoting their social and community engagement and supporting and strengthening their families and neighborhood. In addition to housing one of the district's functional life skills (FLS) programs, our building is also shared with a branch of the Portland Public Library, a Greater Portland Health dental office, and space for the Recreation Department of Portland Parks and Recreation, including a community swimming pool.
