POSITION SUMMARY

The Sustainability Program Manager develops, implements, and evaluates aspects of district-wide resource conservation and sustainability programs designed to make our schools and facilities more sustainable. These programs include waste reduction, behavioral conservation campaigns, occupant/community engagement, sustainability project management, and data analysis.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • Develops and implements behavior-based sustainability programs designed to engage students and staff. Provides classroom presentations and increases awareness of the impact of behavior on resource use and costs.
  • Develops and implements a robust behavioral engagement campaign across schools.
  • Oversees all waste (municipal solid waste, recycling, organics/food waste) programs and contracts. Ensures the district is receiving proper rates and services and serves as the main point of contact for waste haulers district-wide.
  • Works collaboratively with school communities and contractors to manage projects related to greening schoolyards. This includes supporting the design and construction of school gardens, stormwater and bioswale facilities, tree planting, native habitats, and depaving projects.
  • Assists schools with achieving Oregon Green Schools certification.
  • Assists the Senior Manager of Energy and Sustainability in hiring, training, and supervising interns and/or AmeriCorps members.
  • Develops district policies and design standards to support sustainability efforts.
  • Coordinates district-wide sustainability efforts, including initiatives focused on energy and water conservation, waste reduction, and stormwater management.
  • Works closely with building staff, custodians, and maintenance teams to monitor and reduce resource consumption.
  • Reports regularly on the impact of conservation programs on district resource use and costs.
  • Assists the Senior Manager of Energy and Sustainability in monitoring utility invoices, usage, and costs.
  • Supports the district’s participation in the Energy Trust of Oregon’s Strategic Energy Management Program (SEM).
  • Assists in facility planning processes through design review as it relates to sustainability.
  • Performs other sustainability and resource conservation duties as assigned.


FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Monitors expenditures against budget.
  • Prepares necessary documentation for supervisory review and approval.
  • Tabulates budgetary data, calculates figures, and checks for accuracy.


QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, resource conservation, social sciences, business, or a related field.
  • A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for two (2) years of required experience.


Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience coordinating and implementing sustainability or resource conservation programs.
  • Experience working directly with energy and resource conservation programs.
  • Experience in educational facilities, municipalities, or other public agencies serving diverse communities is preferred.
  • Project or program management experience is desirable.
  • Supervisory or prior management experience is desirable but not required.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.


Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and web-based platforms.
  • Experience with resource conservation accounting and data analysis is strongly desirable.
  • Ability to identify and recommend sustainability best practices in schools.


Certifications

  • LEED accreditation is desirable but not required.


CLASSIFICATION AND SALARY

This position is classified as Construction and Maintenance Programs Manager, Pay Grade 27, on the Non-Represented, Confidential, Professional and Management Employees salary schedule.
