What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Systems Engineer position at Portal Space Systems?
Portal Space Systems is on a mission to expand humanity’s freedom of movement in space. We’re building the spacecraft that makes that mission possible. From our Bothell, WA headquarters, we design vehicles with the maneuverability, resilience, and adaptability needed for the next era of orbital operations. Every system we build is in service of a simple idea: space should be more accessible, responsive, and capable. Joining Portal means stepping into a team that believes in bold engineering, fast iteration, and the power of small groups to change what’s possible. If you want your work to directly shape the future of in-space mobility, join us.
Position Summary
The Business Systems Engineer owns the systems infrastructure layer that Portal’s business operations run on. The role is responsible for managing access and configuration across all business tools, rolling out single sign-on and identity management, building cross-system integrations, and standing up the data infrastructure that supports reporting and business intelligence. This position works closely with department teams to configure new tools as they are adopted, and reports directly to the Director of IT.
Core Responsibilities
System Catalog & Platform Ownership
- Map and maintain a live catalog of every tool, data flow, and permission set across the organization
- Own admin access and configuration on all business systems; IT is the platform layer that teams build on
- Onboard new tools into the stack: configure, integrate, document, and maintain
- Ensure no system operates outside IT visibility or outside the compliance framework
Identity & Access Management
- Roll out SSO and SCIM across the full stack via Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD)
- Maintain provisioning and deprovisioning workflows across all tools
- Enforce access controls in alignment with least-privilege principles and compliance requirements
Integrations, Automation & Compliance
- Build integrations that eliminate manual data transfer between systems, leveraging the Microsoft 365 ecosystem and Power Automate
- Configure and maintain direct API integrations where native connectors aren't available; work with REST APIs, webhooks, and authentication patterns (OAuth, API keys) to connect systems
- Manage Drata integrations and maintain the system connections that support the compliance program (ITAR, CMMC Level 2, DFARS)
- Own backup and recovery configuration across all business systems
Data Infrastructure & Business Intelligence
- Route integration data to a centralized data store (Azure-aligned, greenfield build) to support reporting and analytics
- Develop BI dashboards and reports as systems are connected and data becomes available
- Lay the data infrastructure foundation that will eventually connect to mission operations and spacecraft telemetry
What You Bring To Portal
- Hands-on experience administering and configuring business systems across a broad tool stack: identity, HRIS, ERP, CRM, finance, project management, and collaboration platforms
- Practical knowledge of SSO and SCIM provisioning, preferably using Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD)
- Ability to build and maintain system integrations using iPaaS tools (Power Automate, Workato, Make, Boomi, or similar)
- Ability to work with REST APIs, read API documentation, construct and test API calls, and troubleshoot integration failures. No software development background required, but comfort at the API layer is essential
- Comfort working in compliance-sensitive environments; familiarity with access control, audit evidence, and security-aligned system configuration
- Ability to work independently, drive tasks to completion, and bring solutions rather than problems
- Demonstrated curiosity and self-directed learning: independent certifications, personal projects, or courses taken outside of formal education
- Willingness to dive into unfamiliar tools and figure them out
Basic Qualifications
- 3 years of experience in IT/IS systems administration, enterprise systems engineering, or a comparable hands-on role
- Demonstrated experience with SSO/SCIM rollouts and identity management; Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) strongly preferred
- Demonstrated ability to work with REST APIs in the context of system integrations: reading documentation, constructing requests, and troubleshooting responses.
- Experience configuring and administering business systems across multiple platforms (HRIS, ERP, CRM, finance, project management, collaboration, or similar)
- Strong fundamentals in access management, system integrations, and data flows
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Microsoft 365 GCC-High or other FedRAMP-aligned environments
- Experience with Power Automate, Workato, Make, Boomi, or comparable iPaaS tooling
- Familiarity with Drata or similar GRC/compliance automation platforms
- Exposure to data warehouse or BI concepts (Power BI, Azure Synapse, Fabric, or similar)
- ISC2 CC certification, CompTIA Security , or equivalent; or willingness to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Curiosity about AI/ML tools and practical thinking about how they apply to business operations and reporting
- Experience in or genuine interest in aerospace or space technology
