Job Title: Senior Marine Instructor (SMI) – MCJROTC
Location: Portage High School (Portage Township Schools)
Reports To: School Principal and Marine Corps JROTC Regional Director
Position Summary
The Senior Marine Instructor (SMI) is responsible for the leadership, management, and instruction of the
Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (MCJROTC) program at the high school level. The SMI serves as the primary program leader, ensuring the development of cadets in leadership, citizenship, personal responsibility, and academic success while maintaining compliance with Marine Corps and school district standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Program Leadership and Management
• Direct and oversee all aspects of the MCJROTC program in accordance with Marine Corps
policies and district guidelines
• Develop and implement a comprehensive yearly training plan, including leadership education,
physical fitness, and extracurricular activities
• Maintain program compliance with inspections, reporting requirements, and curriculum standards
• Manage program budget, equipment, uniforms, and facilities
Instruction and Curriculum
• Teach MCJROTC curriculum including leadership, citizenship, U.S. history, physical fitness, and military customs and courtesies
• Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners
• Assess student performance and maintain accurate academic records
• Integrate character education and leadership development into daily instruction
Cadet Leadership Development
• Mentor and develop cadet leaders through a structured chain of command
• Supervise and support cadet-led activities such as drill teams, color guard, physical training, and community service
• Promote student accountability, discipline, and teamwork
Student Support and School Engagement
• Foster a positive, inclusive classroom environment that supports student growth
• Collaborate with school staff, counselors, and administration to support student success
• Encourage academic achievement, attendance, and post-secondary readiness
Community and Program Relations
• Serve as the primary liaison between the school, community, and Marine Corps JROTC
headquarters
• Coordinate and participate in school and community events, ceremonies, and service activities
• Promote the MCJROTC program within the school and community
Compliance and Professional Standards
• Adhere to Marine Corps standards of conduct, appearance, and professionalism
• Maintain required certifications and complete annual training
• Ensure compliance with all district policies, state regulations, and Marine Corps directives
Qualifications
• Retired U.S. Marine Corps Officer (required for SMI position)
• Eligible for certification by Marine Corps JROTC Headquarters
• Ability to obtain and maintain state teaching certification or authorization (as required by
state/district)
• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills
• Experience working with youth or in an educational setting preferred
