What are the responsibilities and job description for the Head Sailing Instructor position at Port Washington Yacht Club?
Port Washington Yacht Club is seeking a Head Sailing Instructor for the PWYC adult keel boat Program
Sailing instruction will run from mid-May-mid Oct, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Hours are flexible but generally are from late morning to sunset, 8hrs per day. Salary is competitive and based on a 3 to 5 years sailing experience, with at least 2 as a program leader.
Person shall be creative, well organized, hardworking individual who is eager to share their knowledge and love of sailing and racing with our Program as Waterfront Program Adult Ideal 18, Hobie, J105 & J80 and other vessels that may be added to the fleet.
This “hands on role” will work in a key capacity to support the Club in the following areas:
- Schedule individual adult sailing lessons and clinics on Ideal 18’s and small group clinics on our J80 and J105.
- Certify new members into the Ideal 18 fleet using US Sailing criteria.
- Liaison with Club Chair and Volunteer Committee to actively participate in the promotion and development of all training, social and competitive sailing activities undertaken by the Club.
- Rig up Ideals preseason and assist with basic maintenance of fleet and equipment in season. Order parts as needed.
- De-rig Ideals and prep boats for winter season.
- Supervise race instruction, racing rules and strategy in the Program, specifically on Ideal 18’s and assist in YRA sanctioned regattas for the J80 and J105.
- All Sailing Instructors staff members are expected to be responsible, safety conscious, exhibit strong sailing skills, and communicate well with Club members.
Applicant must demonstrate the following level of experience:
- Knowledge of, but not limited to, Ideal 18’s, Hobie waves, J80’s and J105’s.
- A capacity to take initiatives and work unsupervised to deliver the requirements of instruction and maintenance to ensure high member satisfaction.
- Knowledge of racing rules, strategy and able to demonstrate to Adults in Sailing Program.
- Applicant must have:
- Strong interpersonal skills and a sense of humor
- US Sailing Level 1 Certification
- US Safe Sailing Power Boat Certification and CPR Certification
