The Crew Chief is a working field leader responsible for leading and coordinating daily field operations within assigned city services (e.g., streets, grounds, parks, public utilities functional areas, drainage/stormwater, or meter systems). This position ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable standards. The Crew Chief serves as the primary point of contact between field crews and management and provides technical expertise, leadership, and direction in the maintenance and repair of public infrastructure and assets.Leadership & Supervision
1. Lead, assign, and monitor daily work activities of field crews.
2. Provide direction, training, and mentorship to assigned staff.
3. Evaluate work performance and report personnel issues to supervisors.
4. Promote teamwork, accountability, and high-quality service delivery.
Operations & Work Execution
5. Plan and coordinate daily work orders, projects, and maintenance tasks
6. Perform and assist with skilled and semi-skilled labor as needed
7. Ensure timely completion of work according to standards and schedules
8. Adjust workflow based on environmental conditions, priorities, or emergencies
Safety & Compliance
9. Enforce all safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (e.g., OSHA)
10. Conduct daily safety briefings (“tailgate meetings”)
11. Identify and correct unsafe work practices or hazardous conditions
12. Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
Equipment & Materials Management
13. Operate and oversee use of tools, vehicles, and specialized equipment.
14. Inspect equipment and ensure proper maintenance and repairs.
15. Monitor inventory and request materials and supplies as needed.
16. Prevent loss, damage, or misuse of city property.
Documentation & Reporting
17. Maintain accurate records of work performed, labor hours, and materials used
18. Complete reports, logs, and work orders using city systems
19. Report incidents, accidents, and operational issues promptly
Customer & Community Interaction
20. Respond to citizen inquiries, complaints, and service requests
21. Communicate project impacts (e.g., closures, disruptions) professionally
22. Represent the department in a courteous and service-oriented manner
Emergency Response
23. Respond to after-hours call-outs and emergency situations
24. Lead crews during storm response, utility outages, or public hazards
25. Assist in disaster preparedness and recovery efforts
OTHER
26. Be available for after-hours work.
27. Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities.
28. Prepare reports, maintain records, and provide administrative support to leadership as required.
29. Attend all meetings as required.
30. Maintain relevant certifications and stay updated on industry trends.
31. All other duties as required.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position is part of the City’s Emergency Management Team and, as such, shall be expected to perform all duties that are assigned during an emergency management operation. Any additional compensation, above the normal weekly salary shall be outlined by the City Manager in the City’s Emergency Management Activation and Emergency Declaration. Failure to appear to perform emergency management assignment and to work assigned shifts as scheduled by the City’s Emergency Management Director or individuals designated by the City Manager to assign such functions will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.•High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
•4–7 years of progressively responsible experience in public works, utilities, parks, or related field.
•1–2 years of lead or supervisory experience preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED
•A valid Florida driver's license is required.
•OSHA safety certifications preferred.
•Depending on the department, relevant certifications (e.g., water distribution, pesticide application, traffic control) may be required.
•Strong knowledge of maintenance, construction, and/or utility operations.
•Ability to lead and motivate a team in a field environment.
•Familiarity with safety regulations and best practices.
•Skilled in equipment operation and troubleshooting.
•Ability to read work orders, maps, and technical documents.
•Basic computer skills for reporting and data entry.
•Effective communication and problem-solving skills.
•Ability to communicate effectively verbally, electronically, and in writing.
•Ability to organize work, establishes priorities, meet established deadlines, and follow up on assignments with a minimum of direction.
•Ability to exercise sound independent judgment and discretion in resolving problems and/or conflicts.
