The IT Technical Support Specialist is part of a service-oriented team and provides help desk support and training to Port of Vancouver end-users for information systems including computers, printers, network, software, phone, and voice mail systems. This position is the primary first point of contact for end-users for technical support and assistance.

We seek a professional, knowledgeable, IT Technical Support Specialist for a regular, full-time position. The essential responsibilities for the IT Technical Support Specialist may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Installs and configures computer hardware, software, printers, and scanners. This includes placement of equipment, cabling, data backup and transfer, imaging, basic configurations, standard application installation/set-up, profile transfer, and preparation of old devices for disposal or re-deployment.
  • Plans and implements scheduled desktop maintenance upgrades; analyzes, develops, modifies, and tests business application software; deploys major applications/updates.
  • Maintains and manages printers and print server.
  • Maintains and manages security cameras and VMS servers.
  • Manages IT equipment and supplies inventory.
  • Assists in the management of infrastructure cable management.
  • Creates new user accounts, manages email accounts, resets passwords, and reviews and purges inactive accounts.
  • Determines users’ needs; works with users to resolve problems and answer questions on a variety of hardware components and desktop applications and, when necessary, escalates to other IT staff.
  • Builds, uses, and maintains the port’s Help Desk software, and analyzes and reports statistics of Help Desk activities.
  • Assists in supporting various web and desktop applications.
  • Troubleshoots wireless connections for end users utilizing the management tools for these systems.
  • Participates in long- and short-range technology planning.
  • Assists in the research of new technology and makes recommendations as appropriate.
  • Maintains confidentiality and discretion.
  • Actively supports the Port’s mission and vision and demonstrates values consistently.
  • Works effectively as a team player with all Port employees.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and experience to competently perform the job. Continuing education is required to remain knowledgeable regarding industry trends.

Experience:
Five (5) or more years of related experience required. Must possess a strong foundation in Microsoft technologies, including experience with cloud-based services, modern Windows environments, and enterprise collaboration platforms. Skilled in managing directory services and supporting server infrastructure, with exposure to tools like SharePoint and Microsoft 365. Comfortable navigating a range of IT systems and adaptable to evolving technical environments.

License/Certification:
Valid, unrestricted driver’s license. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC Card) upon hire. Certification as a Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate preferred.

Communication skills:
High level of verbal and written communication skills. Requires the ability to read, write, speak and understand English. Must be able to communicate effectively up, down and across the entire organization. Requires effective listening abilities and the ability to draft clear correspondence. Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information, and practice discretion with such.

Organizational skills:
Able to prioritize and organize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints. Must have the capacity to balance both short- and long-term issues effectively and handle many simultaneous and often conflicting and changing priorities.

Detail-Oriented:
Able to manage detailed information related to computer systems. Must be able to pay close attention to multiple details and follow and understand both verbal and written instructions.

Customer Service:
Consistently provides welcoming, friendly, courteous, prompt, and informative service. Shows respect and value for others. Gains cooperation and agreement from co-workers and management; knows when to push harder and when to ease off. Ability to work professionally with employees and management to facilitate port needs.

Problem solving skills:
Logically thinks through and solves problems involving several variables and is able to make quick decisions when necessary. Exercises independent judgement and analysis in daily work.

Computer Skills:
Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate preferred. SharePoint experience preferred. Knowledgeable in Windows Active Directory, Windows Server 2012 & beyond, Window desktop 2011, Office 365. Ability to continuously use standard office equipment including telephone, copier, fax machine, etc.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical ability to sit, for extended periods throughout the workday.
  • Stand, walk, push/pull, bend, stoop, kneel and reach on a regular to seldom basis.
  • Repetitive hand motions on a frequent basis including typing, grasping and handling.
  • Ability to read handwritten and typed documents on paper and/or computer screens.
  • Ability to communicate continuously via telephone for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. and drive on an as-needed basis.
  • Work is generally performed in an office environment but may occur at various outdoor locations where adverse weather conditions, uneven ground, exposure to moving machinery and moderate to loud noise are common.
  • Able to work in-office, remote or hybrid schedule based on business need.
  • Work hours may include evening, weekend, or on-call work, depending on the requirements of the project.

Special Working Conditions:

In a normal workday, frequent and continuous refer to more than a 50% requirement; regular refers up to 50% and seldom refers to approximately 10%.
