What are the responsibilities and job description for the GARDENER III position at Port of Oakland?
The Port is currently recruiting for three (3) vacancies in the classification of Gardener III. This is skilled gardening and maintenance work at the action level in the care of park areas. Incumbents perform routine duties under general direction and receive special instructions when engaged in technical work. As assigned, employees may act as leadmen of Gardener II's and participate in the training of Gardener II's. The work requires broad general knowledge of gardening and limited problem solving and judgment. Public contacts are outside City government with park patrons involving exchange of information. Performs other related work as required.
Any one position may not include all the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all the duties which may be performed. Incumbent may perform other related duties at the equivalent level.
- Propagates annuals, perennial, turf, shrubs and trees; cultivates exotics, natives, and plants with special requirements.
- Irrigates by system; waters special plants requiring special treatment.
- Fertilizes plants and lawns.
- Prunes, sprays, and mixes and conditions soils.
- Operates tractor powered mowers and renovating turf equipment, post hole diggers, or related ground maintenance equipment, and maintains such equipment in the field.
- Performs manual labor and assists in repair and maintenance of walls, walks, fences, ball fields, piping, and drainage systems, or other related substances.
- As leadman, directs a small crew of Gardener I's and Gardener II's engaged in routine tasks.
- Drives truck if occasion warrants; operates mowers, sprayers, roto tillers, chain saws and pumps.
- Generally maintains an assigned park area.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
This position requires graduation from high school and two years of general gardening work involving the care of lawns, shrubs and flowers.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES
To perform the typical tasks and duties of the position successfully, the knowledge, skills and/or abilities listed below are required.
Knowledge of:
- A wide range of gardening methods and procedures, tools, and their uses.
- Proper methods of planting and caring for lawns, plants, and ground covers.
- Plant diseases, insect pests, and methods of control specific to the Oakland area.
Ability to:
- Operate mechanical equipment used on the job.
- Identify common plants of the area.
- Maintain public contacts of a routine nature.
- Perform heavy physical work.
Stage II: Assessment Examination (Weighted 100%) – The second stage of the selection process may consist of a combination of job-related situational project exercises and an oral panel interview designed to assess technical knowledge and any additional other KSAs. Job-related situational project exercises may consist of written exercises, performance exercises or other situational exercises that would assess the KSAs. The Assessment Examination is designed to test your overall aptitude for the position.
Possession of a valid California Class C driver license at the time and for the duration of appointment.
This classification requires each incumbent to complete and pass a 10-year employment history verification, which will include fingerprinting and a Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) prior to being considered for this position. This status must be maintained for the duration of employment at the Port.
