Job Summary
The Manager of Maternal/Child Nursing oversees and directs the daily operations of the hospital's obstetrics (OB) department, ensuring high-quality care for patients throughout pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postpartum. This role involves leadership, administrative duties, and collaboration with a multidisciplinary healthcare team to maintain excellence in patient care, safety, and staff performance. Duties include managing the day-to-day operations of the department as well as developing, monitoring, and maintaining standards and practices that enhance patient care and meet TJC requirements. Additionally, the Manager of Maternal/Child Nursing is responsible for overseeing the HR function, quality initiatives, fiscal management and performance management. This position will on-call requirements.
Essential Functions
- Moves throughout the facility as needed, appropriately assists in emergency drills and situations, and demonstrates the physical, clinical, and professional capacity to lead the unit as described in the tasks and duties of this position.
- Formulates and executes a strategic business plan for the unit, communicates the plan to the unit, and analyzes the plan to identify gaps and make adjustments.
- Responsible for patient care and overseeing patient care activities for Maternity/OB.
- Acts as a liaison with other departments, leaders, and physicians to ensure optimal care is provided.
- Maintains high standards for professional nursing practice as shown through professional development and leading by example.
- Performs all leadership tasks and duties of this position according to hospital and unit policy and procedure.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Staff Management:
- Supervise, mentor, and evaluate OB nurses, midwives, and support staff.
- Ensure adequate staffing levels for optimal patient care and staff well-being.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and professional work environment.
- Coordinate ongoing education, training, and professional development for OB staff.
Patient Care and Safety:
- Oversee patient care standards to ensure compassionate, evidence-based care.
- Collaborate with physicians, midwives, and other departments to ensure seamless care delivery.
- Monitor patient outcomes, address safety concerns, and implement improvements.
- Ensure adherence to infection control and patient safety protocols.
Administrative and Financial Management:
- Develop and manage departmental budgets, ensuring cost-effective operations.
- Oversee inventory and ensure availability of medical supplies and equipment.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, state regulations, and accreditation requirements (e.g., Joint Commission).
- Participate in strategic planning, quality improvement initiatives, and performance reviews.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Serve as a liaison between staff, physicians, patients, and hospital leadership.
- Address and resolve patient complaints or concerns promptly and professionally.
- Participate in hospital leadership meetings and contribute to decision-making processes.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) required
- Master’s degree in nursing (MSN), Healthcare Administration, or a related field preferred.
Licensure & Certification
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Advanced certification in obstetric nursing (e.g., RNC-OB, C-EFM) preferred.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required
Experience
- Minimum 3-5 years of obstetric nursing experience, including labor and delivery- required
- Previous leadership or management experience in a healthcare setting-preferred
