What are the responsibilities and job description for the OPERATIONS SUPERVISOR (MEDICAL EXAMINER) position at Polk County?
Under general direction of the Polk County Medical Examiner, performs responsible supervisory and administrative oversight for the day-to-day operations of the Polk County Medical Examiner’s Office, ensuring operations are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws as well as Medical Examiner protocols.

- Supervises and evaluates the work of staff; effectively recommends actions related to selection, performance review, and discipline; organizes, prioritizes, and assigns work to meet department objectives.
- Assists the County Medical Examiner in planning, developing, implementing, and evaluating department policies, goals, priorities, and objectives.
- Prepares and administers the department budget, coordinates inventory, and monitors expenditures in accordance with the department strategic plans.
- Develops and implements operational, customer service, and safety policies, ensuring quality assurance and workplace safety compliance. Ensures operations and recordkeeping are in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
- In coordination with the County Medical Examiner and Deputy County Medical Examiner, recommends staff resources, equipment, and training needed to accomplish work assignments; oversees the security and storage of evidence and personal property.
- Represents the department and collaborates with community organizations and other County departments.
- Manages administrative tasks, including scheduling, travel arrangements, mail distribution, and departmental correspondence.
- Prepares and processes resolutions for the Board of Supervisors agendas; prepares and maintains various departmental manuals; organizes and prepares presentation materials for various projects.
- Utilizes personal computer word processing, spreadsheet, and database software programs including Word, Excel, Access, and JD Edwards HR/payroll enterprise software; generates reports and develops electronic forms and computer spreadsheets to track activities.
- Updates information on a variety of forms, logs, journals, and ledgers; keeps employee files current by scanning and indexing personnel documents such as personnel action forms, performance evaluations, and leave requests; archives records.
- Reviews, processes, and maintains payroll including verifying scheduled work hours and overtime, accuracy of entries regarding leaves, compensation time, holiday pay, and shift differential.
- Attends professional training and conferences, as directed by the County Medical Examiner.
- Performs related duties as may be required.
- Considerable knowledge of medical protocol, medical terminology, forensic science, forensic pathology, and pharmacology.
- Considerable knowledge of federal, state and local laws pertaining to medical examiner operations.
- Knowledge of investigative principals, practices, and techniques used in medicolegal death investigation.
- Knowledge of occupational safety requirements and procedures, especially regarding hazardous material and blood borne pathogens.
- Knowledge of procedures for collection and admission of legal evidence and chain of custody.
- Knowledge of the current principles and practices of effective supervision.
- Knowledge of budget preparation and fiscal management.
- Knowledge of equipment or technology and their application to department operations.
- Skill in communicating tactfully and effectively with members of the public, media, law enforcement officials, and family members of the deceased under highly stressful conditions.
- Ability to align behavior with the needs, priorities, and goals of the organization.
- Ability to plan, direct, supervise, train, and evaluate the work of professional, technical, and administrative support staff.
- Ability to coordinate assigned work schedules and assure staff coverage of a 24 hours a day,7 days per week operation.
- Ability to display high standards of ethical conduct and exhibit honesty and integrity.
- Ability to exercise good judgment and work independently.
- Ability to organize and present facts, ideas, and opinions clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and prepare detailed reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County employees, physicians, other health care professionals, and the general public, fostering a collaborative and professional work environment.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule.
- Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Healthcare Administration, or other heath related field, and
- Five years related experience with considerable leadership experience, or
- Any equivalent combination of training and experience that will have provided the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Special Requirements:
- A criminal background check is required.
- A drug screen is required prior to final offer of employment.
- A valid State of Iowa driver’s license is required.
