JOB DESCRIPTION
Exceptional Children Teacher Assistant
Position Code:

FLSA: Non-Exempt
Reports to: Principal
Supervises: N/A
Job Summary: To assist in assessing and providing quality instruction and learning opportunities for exceptional children through a variety of settings and instructional procedures, according to the essential functions listed below..
Essential Functions:
1. Assist in planning/implementing instruction for students identified as exceptional.
2. Assist in overseeing the distribution and intake of medication to students on continuous dosage regimens.
3. Assist in daily instruction to self-contained and resource students.
4. Assist with the maintenance of adaptive communication equipment and other specialized equipment related to the exceptional children’s program.
5. Assist in the identification of specific needs of the exceptional children’s program and order appropriate materials using the allotted budget.
6. Attend to daily physical needs of students as required.
7. Hold a valid bus driver’s license and drive a bus as needed.
Other Functions:
1. Other duties as assigned by supervising teacher or principal.
Education, Experience, and Skills Required:
1. Associate’s Degree or a minimum of 48 semester hours of college credit
2. Prior experience working with children with special needs is preferred
Terms of Employment: 10 months – Teacher Assistant Salary Scale
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of Board of Education policy, North Carolina statutes, and goals established by the Principal.
Environmental Factors:
This position requires lifting (up to 50 lbs.) and dealing with sick students. Must attend to the daily physical needs of students (feeding, bathroom, medical, etc.)
