POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The primary roles and responsibilities for this position is to oversee and manage field crews to construct, alter, repair, maintain, and remove railroad tracks, associated structures and components.  Working with the Project Manager plan and schedule all requirements to control labor, equipment, and material cost timely completing assigned project within established budget.  Guide and direct activities to ensure safe and compliant work is being performed within the railroad, safety, federal and state regulatory requirements.

 

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Manage and direct all employees within each project regarding required work assignments, respond to employee matters, ensure proper training is conducted, and communicate expectations.
  • Pre-plan work activities to develop best means and methods that include appropriate safety action plans. Bring forth a safety first approach to ensure appropriate practices are in place.
  • Collaborating and communicating with managers, supervisors, team members and customers with a positive, constructive approach that addresses concerns, resolves problems, and is proactive, not reactive.
  • Lead by example, have a professional demeanor and create a positive work environment with a focus on relationship building to create trust and respect among all.

  

DAILY OVERSIGHT AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Partnering with the Project Manager, maintain daily/weekly schedules, provide effective production management and reporting, and communicate changes/updates to existing construction operational plan.
  • Continually review with the Project Manager all contracts, project documentation and plans to ensure that the work being completed is in alignment with the most recent specifications.
  • Conduct daily team meetings discussing daily work assignments, review safe practices/procedures, and communicate changes/information that is vital to the team’s success.
  • Continually work with team to build a cohesive, strong Foreman and Field crew that understands production requirements, fulfills responsibilities of his/her role and train/develop each to achieve results.
  • Ensure regular checks on work progress confirming that it conforms to plans and specifications. Ability to engage in discussion of plans and specifications as well as survey and field layout.
  • Oversee and continually review field operations resources (employees/equipment/supplies) to meet deadlines, budgets, schedules, and operational requirements. At times, may need to assist in actual labor or operation of equipment to meet project requirements and maximize efficiency.
  • Coordinate manpower, materials, and equipment to anticipate needs prior and during project work and engage in interview, selection and training of employees.
  • Work with subcontractors to communicate issues/concerns within the project management as well as represent the company to customer when appropriate.
  • Supervise and schedule grading, drainage, paving structures, and other miscellaneous construction crews and subcontractors on a daily basis.
  • Train new employees and develop/mentor/coach all employees to afford opportunities for other available positions.
  • Responsible for assigning, maintaining, and accounting for all assigned resources that include but are not limited to radios, equipment, PPE, and other required inventory. Must incorporate practices that secure PIC property and items are used at optimum efficiency for safety and security of all.
  • Participate in weekly calls with the team to provide updates, challenges, solutions and other details.
  • Commitment to Company Values for self and field crews to support commitment made.
  • Ability to travel 75%-100% of time required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION 

  • High school diploma or GED required or equivalent experience and knowledge.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of heavy-civil construction experience.
  • Experienced with grader, bulldozer, excavator, and other equipment used to manage and assign appropriate operators to equipment and address operational questions/concerns relative to the equipment.
  • Specialized knowledge in civil construction, maintenance, repair, and operations techniques related to railway systems.
  • Knowledge of activities involved in field operations that include budget management, field leadership, understanding resource planning and reading/interpreting changes to project plan.
  • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with internal and external customers reflecting exceptional customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve problems, make decisions, and support management, employees and company in a positive way.
  • Must be able to work under pressure, adapt to a constant changing environment, and be flexible.
  • Perform all supervisory duties assigned.
  • Excellent team building skills.
  • Must have valid Class C driver’s license.
  • Must be able to travel 75-100% of the time.
  • Intermediate computer skills that include MS Outlook Email, specialized software (ProCore) navigation, and use of tablets.

 

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITES

  • Partner with the Director of Safety to create daily safety awareness and understanding of necessary measures that must be adhered to emphasizing safety protocols are extremely important to follow.  
  • Follow all safety training and procedures displaying clear understanding through demonstration of safe work practices.
  • Refer to and comply with instructions, requests, orders, and information posted within bulletins, memorandums, rules, and regulatory guidance/manuals.
  • Must be able to complete and pass requirements for background check and drug screening.
  • Ability to obtain eRailSafe badge approval required.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS           

Position reports to the General Superintendent and is expected to operate under moderate supervisory involvement, depending on the task and the incumbent’s knowledge and ability to complete the task.  All other supervisors remain available for information, advice, guidance, or assistance if needed and may provide training, coaching, and feedback as appropriate. This position supervises up to 10 employees as well as a Foreman depending on managerial needs.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

The Laborer will frequently stand, walk, climb, and move throughout the workday, use their hands, repeat the same movements, and bend or twist their body while handling products and conducting work. Must be able to lift and carry up to 100 lbs.  Frequently move objects up to 65 lbs.  Exposed to loud noise with possible exposure to live tracks and trains as well as high voltage areas.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

The physical environment requires the employee to work outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.  This position works in a very manual work environment with frequent outdoor exposure and spends at least 8 hours daily working on the job site.
