What are the responsibilities and job description for the Patient Transporter position at Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians?

Position Summary: Using GSA vehicles, the Transporter will provide transportation services for clients to health care appointments.  Transporters must have a valid driver's license and clean driving record.   

Essential Functions: 

  • Operate GSA vehicles to transport clients to and from health care appointments identifying destination and time of appointments, selecting best routes, and driving vehicle. May require overnight drives and extended trips with irregular hours.
  • Follow relevant safety regulations and state laws governing vehicle operation and ensure that passengers follow safety regulations.
  • Follow appropriate procedures, including chaperoning, and communicate with schools and parents when scheduling transportation for or transporting minors.
  • Test vehicle equipment such as lights, brakes, horns, or windshield wipers, to ensure proper operation. Inspect interiors and exteriors for damage and wear and tear
  • Provide passengers with assistance entering and exiting vehicles.
  • Communicate with transportation staff by telephone to exchange information and receive requests for passenger service.
  • Consistently complete transportation documentation and operating forms.
  • Fill vehicles with gas and perform routine vehicle maintenance such as regulating tire pressure and adding oil and water and/or transport vehicles for scheduled maintenance.
  • Clean exteriors and interiors of vehicles, including daily snow and ice removal.
  • Notify Transporter I and/or supervisor of any needed repairs and detailing.
  • Maintain certification in adult, infant and child CPR, Community First Aid and Safety, and other safety training as required by the program

 

Non-Essential Functions: 

  • Perform miscellaneous errands, such as carrying inter-office mail between offices and mail to and from post office. 
  • Perform other related functions as assigned.

 

Equipment: 

  • GSA vehicle systems used: Internet, GPS Systems
  • Uniform and ID badge required.

 

Position Requirements:  

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Experience providing transportation service and / or scheduling required.
  • Experience working with Native American communities preferred.  
  • Must be able to work irregular hours occasionally requiring extended road trips. 
  • Strong sense of service and good communication skills required. Must be able to communicate effectively with other Transporters, Health Services administration/management and Tribal Citizens.
  • Knowledge, intellect, temperament, and flexibility to work effectively in changing environment required. 
  • Ability to navigate by road maps and GPS systems required.
  • Ability to maintain client confidence and keep information confidential required.
  • Certification in adult, infant and child CPR, Community First Aid and Safety or ability to obtain within reasonable time required.

Physical Requirements:  

  • Frequently required to use far and near visual acuity.
  • Frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate equipment. 
  • Frequently required to talk and hear. 
  • Frequently required to stoop, kneel, crouch, and bend when assisting clients.

 

Work Environment: 

  • Work is performed within an enclosed vehicle, in public locations, and also in private homes.
  • Travel is necessary, so the ability to travel as needed is required.
