What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tour guide position at Poe Baltimore, Poe House?
Local museum with multiple locations and bus tours is looking for part-time tour guides to join our team. Candidate must be punctual, personable, and have reliable transportation. This is a hands-on role: you’ll lead tours, keep sites ready for guests, and represent the museum at special events. October is our busiest month — new hires must be available for extended shifts during the festival and related programs. Evening events scheduled on average once per month.
Consistent attendance and punctuality are essential — repeated no-shows, tardiness, or failure to follow instructions will result in removal from the schedule. Background check required. Script and resource materials are provided and applicants are required to complete training (paid) before being assigned to guide tours independently.
Responsibilities
- Lead scheduled hourly tours and manage check-in/ticketing
- Participate actively in training programs and other opportunities in order to expand knowledge of the tours and strengthen interpretive skills.
- Welcome the public, promote tours, and direct visitors to facilities, exhibits, and other opportunities during special events
- Attend events, festivals and programs which promote tours and City resources.
- Participate in ongoing evaluation programs and data collection from tour participants.
- Respond to different groups of visitors (adults, school children, and families) by varying tour content and techniques.
- Help to ensure public safety by responding calmly and professionally to emergencies.
- Undertake light cleanup and hourly setup
- Maintain site safety protocol, including cleaning/disinfecting public areas
Qualifications
- Applicants must be 18 years or older. High School degree or GED required.
- Excellent speaking skills; especially the ability to succinctly express themselves. Public speaking or performance background beneficial.
- Complete vaccination record
- Strong interpersonal skills – must be able to make each visitor feel welcomed and engage with children.
- Sustained intellectual curiosity in Baltimore’s history and culture. Interest and/or experience in education, history, literature, museum studies, or a related field.
- Friendly attitude towards visitors, groups and staff and a strong team player. Individuals must be outgoing, articulate, and enjoy interacting with the public.
- Must be able to work independently and be dependable.
- Must be able to walk or stand for periods up to 90 minutes and climb a minimum of three flights stairs.
- Must be able to work in variable weather conditions, including summer heat.
- Must be able to speak at an acceptable volume.
- Must be able to attend required training.
Compensation: Hourly pay is $15 per-hour. Paid training (10 hours) is $8.75 per hour. Uniform shirt provided. Bottoms may be any shade of khaki colored pants, cargo shorts or appropriate length skirt or shorts, and closed toes comfortable walking shoes.
