POSITION SUMMARY
The 5th Grade Teacher is responsible for planning and delivering high-quality instruction that supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral growth of 5th grade students at Pocosin Innovative Charter School (PICS). PICS is a K-8 public charter school in Creswell, NC, with a distinctive agri-focused identity rooted in the region's agriculture, forestry, fishing, and wetlands ecosystem. This role carries responsibility for End-of-Grade (EOG) testing outcomes and plays a key part in the school's academic growth goals. The Teacher will create a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment while implementing the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and supporting the mission and vision of the school.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and deliver engaging lessons aligned with North Carolina curriculum standards connecting instruction to the school’s agriculture-based, hands-on learning approach where applicable.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the varying academic, behavioral, and developmental needs of students.
- Maintain a classroom environment that promotes respect, safety, and student engagement.
- Establish and enforce classroom expectations and behavior management procedures.
- Assess student progress regularly and maintain accurate academic records.
- Utilize student data to inform instructional decisions and interventions.
- Communicate effectively and professionally with parents, students, staff, and administration.
- Participate in MTSS, EC, 504, and other student support processes as needed.
- Collaborate with grade-level teams and school staff to improve instructional practices and student outcomes.
- Integrate instructional technology and digital learning tools into classroom instruction.
- Supervise students during assigned duties, school activities, transitions, and field trips.
- Attend required meetings, professional development activities, and school events.
- Maintain confidentiality of student and personnel information in accordance with FERPA and school policies.
- Follow all school policies, procedures, and state and federal regulations.
- Perform other duties as assigned by administration.
INSTRUCTIONAL EXPECTATIONS
- Deliver rigorous and developmentally appropriate instruction.
- Maintain lesson plans and instructional materials.
- Provide timely feedback to students and families regarding academic progress.
- Support student growth through remediation, enrichment, and intervention strategies.
- Foster critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT EXPECTATIONS
- Maintain consistent and appropriate classroom procedures.
- Build positive relationships with students while maintaining professional boundaries.
- Address behavioral concerns promptly and professionally.
- Utilize positive behavior supports and restorative practices when appropriate.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Education or related field required.
- Valid North Carolina teaching license or eligibility for licensure preferred.
- Previous teaching experience preferred.
- Strong organizational, communication, and classroom management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced charter school environment.
- Proficiency with educational technology and student information systems preferred.
COMPENSATION
Salary range: $43,000 to $65,000, commensurate with years of experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and move throughout the classroom and school campus for extended periods.
- Ability to supervise students in indoor and outdoor settings.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment may include frequent interruptions, moderate noise levels, and daily interaction with students, staff, and families.
