Bring the Right Attitude. Learn the Trade. Build Your Future.

Ambient Recruiting is partnering with a progressive Northern Michigan manufacturer in Harbor Springs to hire a dependable and motivated Shop Hand Helper. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to work with their hands, learn from experienced welders and fabricators, and develop valuable skills in welding, metal fabrication, and industrial manufacturing.

Previous welding, metal fabrication, or shop experience is highly valued, but our client is also willing to invest in the right person. We're looking for someone who is reliable, trustworthy, coachable, mechanically inclined, and genuinely interested in learning and growing with the company.

You'll work alongside experienced team members, assist with fabrication and assembly projects, learn how to work with different materials and tools, and gradually take on more responsibility as your skills develop. If you take pride in your work and want an opportunity where work ethic and attitude matter just as much as what's already on your résumé, we'd like to hear from you.

What You'll Be Doing

As a Shop Hand Helper, you'll support experienced welders and fabricators throughout the manufacturing and fabrication process. Depending on your current skills and training, you'll:

  • Assist welders and fabricators with day-to-day shop projects
  • Help fabricate parts used in the assembly and manufacture of industrial equipment
  • Measure, prepare, cut, grind, sand, and finish metal components
  • Operate hand and power tools safely
  • Use grinders, sanders, cut-off saws, and other common shop equipment
  • Assist with fitting and assembling fabricated components
  • Learn to read and interpret layout drawings, assembly drawings, and job specifications
  • Prepare materials and components for welding and assembly
  • Assist with MIG and TIG welding projects based on experience and ability
  • Work with stainless steel and other fabrication materials
  • Learn additional welding and metal fabrication techniques
  • Help maintain tools, equipment, materials, and shop supplies
  • Keep work areas clean, organized, and safe
  • Work alongside experienced welders, fabricators, and other shop team members
  • Cross-train in different areas of production and manufacturing
  • Take on additional responsibilities as your skills and knowledge develop

What We're Looking For

Successful candidates typically have:

  • Reliable attendance and a strong work ethic
  • A trustworthy and accountable approach to work
  • Willingness and eagerness to learn
  • Ability to take direction and accept feedback
  • Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with their hands
  • Safety-conscious work habits
  • Ability to follow instructions and established procedures
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to work in an active manufacturing and shop environment
  • Ability to work independently once trained
  • Willingness to jump in and help the team where needed
  • Respectful and professional attitude
  • Ability to work well with different personalities
  • Interest in developing new skills and taking on greater responsibility

Preferred Qualifications

Previous hands-on experience is a definite plus, particularly in:

  • MIG welding
  • TIG welding
  • Metal fabrication
  • Stainless steel fabrication
  • Manufacturing or production
  • Grinding, sanding, cutting, and material preparation
  • Hand and power tools
  • Plasma cutting
  • Reading technical or assembly drawings
  • Mechanical assembly
  • Construction, automotive, maintenance, or other skilled trades

Don't check every box? We still encourage you to apply.

For the right person, mechanical aptitude, reliability, a strong work ethic, and willingness to learn can go a long way.

Benefits May Include

Benefits offered by our client upon hire may include:

  • Competitive starting wage based on knowledge and experience
  • Health insurance
  • Company-sponsored SIMPLE IRA
  • Paid vacation

  • Full-time, year-round employment
  • On-the-job learning and cross-training
  • Opportunities to develop welding and fabrication skills

  • Gain hands-on experience with real equipment and projects
  • Learn to work with stainless steel and other fabrication materials
  • Develop experience reading drawings and job specifications
  • Cross-train in multiple areas of the shop
  • Build skills that can lead to greater responsibility and career growth
  • Work in an environment where reliability and willingness to learn are valued
  • Be part of a smaller team where your contribution matters
  • Develop skills in an established industrial manufacturing environment
  • Grow with a progressive Northern Michigan manufacturer

Real Talk

This is an active shop environment where you'll be working with metal, tools, equipment, and experienced tradespeople. You'll get dirty, stay on your feet, and be expected to help wherever the team needs you.

We're prioritizing welding and metal fabrication experience, but you don't necessarily need to walk in knowing everything. You could be an experienced fabricator, or you could be earlier in your career with mechanical ability, hands-on experience, and a desire to learn a skilled trade.

What matters every day is that you show up, do what you say you're going to do, take direction, ask questions, learn from mistakes, treat your coworkers with respect, and take pride in your work.

As you demonstrate your abilities, you'll have opportunities to learn additional techniques, cross-train in different areas, and take on more advanced responsibilities.

If you're dependable, coachable, and motivated to develop a skilled trade, this could be an opportunity to build something long-term.
