The Assistant Manager, Play Operations serves as the museum’s daily Manager on Duty (MOD) and is responsible for the successful oversight of museum floor operations. The Assistant Manager will work across departments to ensure high-quality playful visitor experience and excellent customer service to all museum visitors. This position will coordinate play and family experiences in museum exhibits and programming spaces, oversee daily floor operations, and be responsible for scheduling floor coverage and other administrative duties in the Museum Learning department.

- Manager on Duty (MOD) responsibility
- Actively coordinates and oversees Museum Learning floor staff in all areas related to playful visitor experience and daily floor operations on the museum floor including exhibit engagement and maintenance, program facilitation, opening and closing procedures of exhibits, staff scheduling, training, and carousel operation.
- Creates and maintains monthly Museum Learning staff schedule to ensure all areas of the museum floor are staffed appropriately.
- Makes timely, sound judgment calls when addressing visitor and/or staff concerns, remaining calm, thoughtful, and fair with the goal of resolving issues efficiently and positively.
- On days when an Admissions manager is not present, assists Admissions department managers with daily front desk operations and has oversight responsibilities for Admissions operations and staff.
- Collaborates with Senior Director, Museum Learning and department Managers on managing daily operations of the Museum Learning department.
- Serves as the Museum’s main MOD. Daily MOD duties include, but are not limited to, adapting staff schedule changes and updates, addressing visitor concerns, completion of daily operations reports, implementing necessary safety procedures, leading start and end of day staff huddles, conducting museum rounds to ensure exhibits are set and safe for play, and completing relevant incident reports.
- Coordinates with all Museum departments involved in the playful visitor experience, including but not limited to, Museum Learning, Admissions, Events, Group Sales, Exhibits, Operations, Marketing, IT and Security, and assists departments with tasks related to daily floor operations as needed.
- Acts as the point of contact for all post-admissions visitor issues and concerns, resolving them tactfully, effectively, and as quickly as possible.
- Monitors and responds to staff communication channels such as Teams messages and Relay calls and is actively involved in resolving all safety and security codes.
- Communicates any relevant observations as it pertains to overall visitor experience to the Manager of Business Development & Visitor Experience to ensure a best-in-class experience for our visitors.
- Works alongside Museum security to ensure safety of staff and visitors, and coordinates with security to follow emergency procedures and protocols.
- Maintains an awareness of current Museum procedures to best answer visitor questions in a friendly and professional manner.
- Supports Museum Learning programs and guides experiences that encourage families to discover, imagine, get curious, and learn through play.
- Ensures exhibit spaces are cleaned and reset utilizing department standard operating procedures, including maintaining daily opening/set up and closing/clean up procedures, resetting exhibit props, and actively maintaining the Food and Family exhibit throughout the day and during specific restock times.
- Attends all Museum Learning and Museum’s All Staff meetings, training, and professional development sessions, including weekly Operations meeting and weekly Floor Management meeting.
- Trains new Museum Learning staff on all department policies and procedures.
- Coordinates the maintenance of the department storage spaces and program supplies.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in education, museum studies, youth development, hospitality or related field required.
- Minimum 2 years supervisory experience required.
- Must be able to effectively supervise and motivate staff in a team environment.
- Knowledge of early childhood education and play-based learning principles commonly used in preschool and elementary education programs preferred.
- Detail-oriented individual who can also keep an eye towards the big picture & considers the whole experience in their planning.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Teams, Word and Excel.
- Collaborative individual who is willing to work with others, try new ideas and approaches.
- Must be able to interact with all Museum visitors and colleagues politely and effectively, and show a willingness to problem solve in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a professional attitude.
