What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Service Controls Engineer position at PLC Paramedics?
When a customer's system goes down and nobody can figure out why, we're the team that shows up, diagnoses it, and gets it running again. As a Field Service Controls Engineer, you're the one the whole team calls when a problem needs real depth — not just a fix, but an understanding of why it happened and how to build it right.
What You'll Actually DoYou take on the hardest automation problems: full system builds from scratch, writing custom programs for PLCs, HMIs, and VFDs across every major platform, and diagnosing the failures nobody else could figure out. You support our field technicians too — walking them through a fix remotely or heading out to join them on-site when a job needs an extra set of hands. Between projects, you work independently from home on system design, hardware research, and technical documentation.
What We Need From You• 5 years of hands-on automation controls experience, with real, from-scratch programs you can show us — no degree required, results matter more
• Proficiency (or the ability to quickly get there) across major platforms: RSLogix 5000, FactoryTalk Studio, TIA Portal, DirectSoft, and others
• Strong troubleshooting skills with a DMM, laptop, and advanced test equipment
• Strong reading comprehension — you can program an unfamiliar device from the manual alone
• Willingness to travel to customer sites on short notice and respond after hours for true emergencies
• A high level of personal integrity and the self-discipline to work without supervision
How We WorkNo busywork, no clock-watching. If your projects are on schedule and there's no active emergency, your time is yours. In exchange, we run on the 15-Minute Rule: when a real crisis hits, you respond within 15 minutes during normal business hours.. You're paid for expertise and availability, not for sitting at a desk.
What You Get• Base salary quarterly bonus tied to project execution and successful resolution of escalated field issues
• A company laptop pre-loaded with licensed VMs for every major automation platform, plus premium diagnostic gear
• Vehicle program: mileage reimbursement company EZ-Pass
• 401(k) and health insurance
- If you're the person people already call when something's stumped everyone else — and you want to be treated like a partner, not a headcount — we want to hear from you.
