What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Defender position at Platte County Government?
Applications are now open for the appointment of the Platte County Public Defender. The selected candidate’s term will begin in January 2027.
Position Overview:
- The Public Defender must be an attorney licensed to practice law in the State of Nebraska.
- Prior jury trial experience is strongly preferred for this role.
- This is a full-time position overseeing two Deputy Public Defenders and two legal support staff.
- The Public Defender is responsible for preparing the office’s annual budget for approval by the Platte County Board of Supervisors.
- The office represents indigent clients in misdemeanor and felony cases, child support enforcement and establishment matters, mental health board proceedings, and certain juvenile court cases.
Compensation:
Contract terms and compensation will be determined upon approval by the Platte County Board of Supervisors; compensation will in part be determined commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
