Salary Range: $61,667 - $90,223 for Certified Teachers and $54,560 - $57,970 for Uncertified Teachers (Teachers with Temporary Authorities to Teach – TAT)

Ad Valorem - 2.40 parish property (ad valorem) tax mills are dedicated to employee salaries. The annual receipts from this tax are distributed to employees twice a year, one-half in January and one-half in June. The amount of each employee’s supplement is the employee’s salary multiplied by the annual percentage (computed each year based on actual tax revenues)

The Choir Director at Belle Chasse High School is responsible for planning, developing, and leading a comprehensive choral music program that promotes student growth in vocal technique, music literacy, performance, and artistic expression. The Choir Director provides high-quality instruction during the school day and directs extracurricular choral activities, including concerts, assessments, festivals, auditions, and community performances. The position requires strong instructional leadership, recruiting skills, effective program management, and collaboration with students, families, school staff, and community stakeholders.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Instruction and Student Learning

  • Plan and deliver standards-aligned instruction in choral music for high school students.
  • Teach vocal technique, sight-reading, music theory fundamentals, rehearsal techniques, and ensemble performance skills.
  • Develop and implement lessons that meet district and state curriculum expectations and address varying student needs and abilities.
  • Assess student progress regularly through formal and informal measures and use data to guide instruction.
  • Create a classroom and rehearsal environment that supports student achievement, engagement, discipline, and artistic growth.
  • Provide appropriate accommodations and modifications for students in accordance with IEPs, 504 plans, and other instructional supports.

Program Leadership

  • Direct and manage all aspects of the high school choir program, including curricular and extracurricular ensembles, small groups, and soloists.
  • Prepare students for concerts, performances, adjudicated events, honor choir auditions, solo and ensemble events, and other school or community appearances.
  • Establish performance expectations and maintain high standards for musicianship, conduct, attendance, and academic eligibility.
  • Promote student recruitment, retention, and continued participation in the choir program.
  • Collaborate with feeder middle school programs and district music staff to support vertical alignment and program growth.

Operations and Administration

  • Select appropriate repertoire and instructional materials that reflect educational goals, student readiness, and community standards.
  • Maintain accurate records related to grades, attendance, inventory, music library, uniforms/costumes, fees, and program communications.
  • Assist in developing and managing the program budget in accordance with district procedures.
  • Maintain, secure, and account for school-owned equipment, music, technology, and other program materials.
  • Coordinate calendars, rehearsals, performances, travel, transportation, and related logistics for choir events and trips.
  • Ensure compliance with all district, state, and event-specific rules, policies, and procedures.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Communicate effectively with students, parents, administrators, counselors, faculty, and community partners.
  • Work collaboratively with school staff and district leadership to support student success and campus goals.
  • Represent the school and district professionally in all interactions.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, district trainings, and school events as required.
  • Remain current in best practices in choral pedagogy, vocal health, rehearsal techniques, and music education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or district administrator.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Music Education, Choral Music, Vocal Music, or a related field.
  • Valid Louisiana teaching certificate, or the ability to obtain one with appropriate endorsements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of vocal pedagogy, choral literature, music literacy, and ensemble instruction.
  • Strong classroom management, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to accompany basic vocal exercises and rehearsals on piano or keyboard, or otherwise support rehearsals effectively.

Preferred

  • Experience teaching or directing a high school choir.
  • Experience preparing students for performance assessments, honor ensembles, solo and ensemble events, or similar adjudicated performances.
  • Experience with program recruitment, event coordination, and music program administration.
  • Knowledge of choral music technology, sound systems, and digital instructional tools.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, conduct, and actively supervise students for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and move music equipment and materials as needed.
  • Ability to travel with and supervise students during performances and school-related events.

SALARY RANGE: $54,560 - $73,205
