About the role

We are seeking an experienced Finance Director to oversee and manage the financial operations of a nonprofit organization. This role will lead all accounting, financial reporting, compliance, and audit coordination functions while ensuring financial integrity and operational efficiency.

The Finance Director will manage the organization’s accounting systems, oversee budgeting and expense management, coordinate audits and tax filings, and maintain strong banking and financial relationships. This individual will work closely with executive leadership and the board to provide financial insight, ensure regulatory compliance, and support the organization’s long-term financial stability.

This role blends hands-on accounting responsibilities with strategic financial oversight, making it ideal for a finance professional who enjoys both operational execution and leadership-level financial planning.

What you'll do

Financial Management & Accounting

  • Oversee all accounting operations including nonprofit bookkeeping, general ledger management, payroll coordination, and financial reporting.
  • Manage the accounting system and ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with GAAP.
  • Perform and oversee bank reconciliations, account monitoring, and financial record maintenance.
  • Lead month-end and year-end closing processes.
  • Prepare financial statements and present financial results to executive leadership and board stakeholders.
  • Monitor and manage expense tracking and financial controls to ensure responsible stewardship of funds.

Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and provide ongoing financial forecasting.
  • Work closely with leadership to analyze financial performance and provide recommendations for strategic decision-making.
  • Prepare variance analysis and financial dashboards to monitor financial health.
  • Support leadership with financial insights for operational and strategic initiatives.

Banking & Cash Management

  • Manage the organization’s banking relationships and financial service providers.
  • Oversee payment systems used for processing member or sharing requests, including reconciliation.
  • Monitor account activity and implement fraud prevention practices and alerts.
  • Manage ACH and credit card billing functions.
  • Implement and manage financial tools such as virtual wallet solutions.
  • Oversee reserve management including sweep accounts, certificates of deposit, and investments.
  • Monitor liquidity and cash flow to ensure financial stability.

Compliance, Tax & Audit Coordination

  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, regulatory requirements, and tax regulations.
  • Coordinate external nonprofit audits and manage relationships with auditors.
  • Prepare documentation and schedules required for audits and regulatory reviews.
  • Coordinate preparation of federal and state nonprofit tax filings.
  • Manage evolving state tax requirements and any applicable sales tax reimbursements.
  • Ensure compliance with internal controls and financial governance policies.

Financial Systems & Process Improvement

  • Maintain and improve accounting systems and reporting capabilities.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and financial efficiencies.
  • Implement best practices for financial management, internal controls, and reporting.
  • Ensure financial data integrity and security across financial systems.

Lease & Contract Financial Management

  • Support coordination and financial oversight of lease agreements and facility arrangements.
  • Assist leadership in evaluating potential office or facility expansion opportunities.
  • Monitor financial commitments associated with lease agreements and vendor contracts.

Vendor & Third-Party Coordination

  • Coordinate with third-party financial service providers including payroll, retirement providers, banking institutions, and audit firms.
  • Monitor vendor performance and financial reporting from external service providers.
  • Ensure appropriate approvals are obtained for third-party fees and services.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
  • CPA or advanced accounting certification preferred
  • 5–10 years of progressive accounting or finance experience
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting or nonprofit financial management strongly preferred
  • Experience managing audits and regulatory compliance
  • Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, QuickBooks Online, or similar systems
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong understanding of GAAP and nonprofit financial reporting requirements
  • Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
  • Strong financial systems and accounting software experience
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to executives and board members
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment
