Summary/Objectives

The Organizer plays a key role in supporting the mission and services of Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho (PPGWNI) by leveraging grassroots efforts to empower, amplify, and mobilize supporters to take action to protect and advance health care and human rights on a local, state, and national level.

Essential Functions

This position supports the state and local Public Affairs team in implementing advocacy, voter identification, voter engagement, and mobilization programs; coordinates community outreach, field work, voter contact, activist cultivation, and media relations. Depending on geographic location and the guidance of the Field Manager, provide all work described with a special focus on Planned Parenthood supporters, allies and community in accordance with PPFA Public Affairs program standards. If working as a Raiz Fellow, outreach will prioritize Latinx community members and follow Raiz program standards.

  • Recruit and support activists in targeted geographic areas who will become informed on local, state, and national reproductive health issues and take other actions to further the Public Affairs goals of Planned Parenthood.
  • Perform voter engagement tactics during presidential, state, and local elections including but not limited to: Phone banking, door belling/canvassing, crowd canvassing, visibility efforts, grassroots lobbying, rallies, media events, and tabling.
  • Collaborate with GWNI departments to source public affairs volunteers and achieve department goals and prioritize to create, grow, support and increase the activist base.  
  • This role trains volunteers and interns on public affairs priority issues, strategies and tactics, Planned Parenthood policies, and state specific-specific political processes. Organizers are asked to direct the activities of interns and volunteers as needed for support of events and advocacy work.
  • Coordinate grassroots mobilization efforts, including voter education, engagement, and mobilization efforts in support of both state and federal legislative issues.
  • Execute benchmark outreach metrics as outlined in the affiliate Public Affairs Plan and other key plans as needed.
  • Represent PPGWNI at community outreach events, canvassing, lobbying events, fundraisers, legislative meetings and hearings.
  • Demonstrate continuous learning and seek ongoing training and development.
  • Host monthly events for volunteers
  • Attend and support in all in-person meetings
  • Develop, grow, and maintain influential relationships with coalition partners, elected officials and their staff, community organizations, business organizations, media, the public, the voting public, and other Washington State public affairs staff.
  • Facilitate and provide general coaching and guidance to assigned Generation Action campus chapters and assist with events, initiatives, and outreach as needed.
  • Manage volunteer shifts for Health Center Advocacy Program (HCAP), which assists patients with voter registration, volunteer opportunities, and storytelling.
  • Be able to work independently and self-motivated with support and guidance from the Field Manager
  • Serve as a role model for our In This Together (ITT) workplace values and service standards.
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of 501c(3)/501c(4) and PAC legal and compliance issues and work on a contracted basis to support Planned Parenthood Advocates of Greater Washington and North Idaho (PPAGWNI) C4 and PAC efforts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Organization Structure & Interfaces 

This position reports to the  Public Affairs Field Manager and often collaborates with the Health Center Managers, Brand Specialist, Development Staff, affiliate volunteers, and other departments, as well as externally with coalition groups, community partners, elected officials, campus administrators, vendors, media, and Planned Parenthood affinity groups. This position will also regularly connect with community members, the education department, Generation Action teams, and students within the region. This position must play an active role in their individual communities.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

  • BA/BS in related field (preferred but not required)
  • Ability to walk to do door-to-door canvassing, as well as ability to stand for long periods of time while crowd canvassing, visibility or tabling.
  • Comfortability with “cold calling” on issues and for volunteer recruitment and/or fundraising in some cases.
  • The skills to collaborate across groups and departments, connecting with and exhibiting a solid understanding of strategic priorities.
  • Reliable transportation - intrastate travel is required 25-50% of the time during peak tabling season.
  • Prior community organizing or political campaign experience (preferred but not required)
  • A commitment and desire to educate and mobilize individuals around issues of Reproductive Justice.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish is an asset.

  • Language Skills - Must be able to read and interpret documents and reference materials such instruction booklets, operations and procedural manuals, sketches and schematics. Ability to create, write and word process accurate reports and correspondence using computer systems and Microsoft application software. Ability to speak effectively over the phone and in person with individuals, community groups and the media providing credible and accurate information consistent with our brand strategy and excellent customer service.
  • Data Utilization - Requires the ability to arrange, compare, count, differentiate, measure, and/or sort data and information. This includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics are similar to divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.
  • • Situational Reasoning - Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of duties which are often characterized by frequent change. Must remain calm under pressure and in extreme situations requiring deference to education and training.
  • Functional Reasoning - Requires the ability to define and articulate problems, collect data and establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply principles of rational systems. Ability to interpret instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form. Ability to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.
  • Mathematical Aptitude - Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate decimals and percentages. May use higher math functions like statistical and regression analysis to complete work assignments.
  • Motor Coordination - Requires hand-eye coordination; finger dexterity and a combination of sitting, standing, climbing, stooping, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling; carrying, pushing, pulling lifting materials of 20-30 pounds; may occasionally be required to exert physical effort involving heavier objects and materials with assistance. Must be able transport, lift, set-up and operate various portable office equipment like laptop computers, printers, faxes, scanners, projectors, and audiovisual equipment.
  • Visual - Must be able to discriminate colors and shades of colors; ability to read and adjust focus. Must be able to operate a personal motorized vehicle during day and nighttime hours.
  • Sensory - Ability to perceive and/or discriminate sounds and smells/odors, depths, and concentrations. Must be able to listen effectively in both taking direction and offering assistance. Must be skilled at identifying and eliminating communication challenges by proactively seeking out mutual solutions.
  • Environment - Exposure to routine office conditions as well as adverse environmental conditions such as dust, temperature and noise extremes. May be exposed to blood borne pathogens (BBP) and/or other infectious materials (OPIM) when in the clinic environment. Will be exposed to protestors and other individuals acting in opposition to our brand and mission in the external community.

Travel
Must be able to travel both in-state and nationally as needed with limited notice. Travel required up to 50 percent of the time and may include overnight travel as needed. A valid and unencumbered driver’s license, access to reliable transportation, and vehicle insurance is required.


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., however this position is regularly required to work non-routine business hours in order to fulfill job responsibilities, which can include long hours, evenings, and weekends as needed.
