When you join PPGNY as a Registered Charge Nurse, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily operations of surgical and reproductive health services within PPGNY health centers as a clinical leader. This role combines direct patient care with nursing supervision, ensuring safe, high-quality, and patient-centered services across all phases of abortion care, including procedural support and moderate sedation.


Working under the direction of the Clinical Nurse Supervisor or designee, the Charge RN provides coordination of clinical workflow, assigns staff based on acuity and competencies, and serves as a resource to providers and nursing staff. The Charge RN also plays a key role in maintaining regulatory compliance, supporting quality assurance, and onboarding and precepting nursing and support personnel.


Direct Clinical Care (100%)
  • Consults with Abortion or Anesthesia provider for any patient issues as set forth in the SAB Protocol.
  • Monitors patient flow in the surgical area, communicates and trouble shoots problems
  • Maintains documentation of abortion logs.
  • Responsible for acquisition, distribution and documentation of controlled substances. Maintains narcotic and medication protocol, monitors emergency cart equipment to ensure adequate supplies and check expiration dates.
  • Review of patient management – Local, Mid Tri, Ectopic, EPL, inadequate tissue and inconclusive sonography.
  • Assists and/or prepare patients for exam/procedure or treatment.
  • Assist clinicians in transfer of patient to recovery room after completion of surgical procedure.
  • Performs any duties related to preparing instruments, equipment and/or medication needed for exam treatment/procedure.
  • Provides post procedure patient education including detailed information regarding procedures, possible side effects post procedure. Assists with emergency care and transports patients.
  • Evaluates patient's post-procedure/exam/treatment status, administering medication as prescribed, and identifies need for clinician intervention.
  • Assists in the training and supervision of licensed and non-professional staff.
  • Accepts individual and joint responsibility for and participates in health care center efforts to comply with all organizational and quality assurance guidelines, and all applicable government regulations.
  • Accepts joint responsibility for and participates in overall health center efforts to achieve all goals set to improve customer relations, increase customer satisfaction and promote repeat customer visits.
  • Understands and commits to modeling excellent customer service in all aspects of health care delivery. Accepts joint responsibility for and participates in overall health center efforts to achieve goals and policies on professionalism, wait time in the clinic/on the phone, and the system for addressing client complaints.

  • Completes all responsibilities according to established protocols, policies and
  • standard practices in the areas of ADA and regulatory compliance programs such as HIPAA.
  • Works effectively with volunteers, trainees and temp agency personnel.
  • Performs other educational, quality chart reviews, infection control and other experiences and duties as required.
  • Demonstrate adaptability to various site workflows, staffing models, and patient volumes. Provide clinical leadership and coverage across PPGNY health centers

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Education Requirements:
    • Requires an ability equal to that usually derived from satisfactory completion of courses required for graduation from an accredited college or university with a Nursing Degree
     Experience Requirements:
    • Requires previous experience of a minimum of 1 to 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role, or equivalent experience working within the SAB Nursing Team.
    • Must demonstrate strong customer service skills as it relates to patient care and overall communications.
    • Requires computer proficiency.
    • Excellent communication skills, judgment and problem-solving skills are essential.
     Licensure/Certifications:
    • Current NYS Nurses License and Registration.
    • Current BLS/ACLS Certification
     TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires prolonged sitting and repetitive tasks including use of a computer. Frequent standing, walking, bending. Must be able to walk up and down stairs. Requires lifting or moving of patients/supplies/equipment. Visual acuity sufficient to perform frequent work on a computer screen and review printed reports and other materials. Requires the ability to hear and to communicate orally with others. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, and filing cabinets, and medical equipment and will require reaching, grasping, pushing and pulling.
    TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: This job operates in a professional office environment. Potential exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions in a health center environment. May require travel to other health centers, at times in inclement weather. Requires flexible schedule and during peak activity periods work more than 7.5 hours per day and/or 37.5 hours per week.
