CNC Machnist

**Summary **

Transforms raw materials or components by milling, turning, threading, drilling, tapping, and related activities in compliance with drawings, specifications, and quality requirements. Works cooperatively with other machinists and departments to minimize delays, meet schedules, and achieve standard times. Level 3 performs all Level 1–2 duties with the addition of advanced programming and complex setups on milling and turning centers, leading technical problem‑solving and on‑floor process improvements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create from new and perform complex setups (multi‑op, tight tolerances, critical finishes; multi‑axis or live‑tooling where applicable).

  • Make advanced on‑control program edits; collaborate with programmers on CAM/post issues.

  • Engineer work holding and tooling strategies; recommend or design simple fixtures/jigs.

  • Optimize feeds/speeds, sequencing, and tool paths for cycle‑time, quality, and tool life.

  • Read/interpret complex blueprints and advanced GD&T; determine inspection strategy and acceptance criteria.

  • Lead troubleshooting/root‑cause for machining defects; implement robust corrective/preventive actions.

  • Support/lead FAIs as required; provide guidance on inspection methods and documentation accuracy.

  • Lead on‑machine trials for new tools, coolants, and methods; document and standardize best practices.

  • Drive setup‑time reduction, scrap reduction, and repeatability improvements.

  • Model safe practices, including proper rigging and LOTO; intervene on unsafe conditions.

  • Perform/document operator PM checks, identifying machine condition issues for maintenance.

  • Safely operate forklifts, overhead/jib cranes, and other lifting devices; support handling of heavy/awkward parts.

  • Perform other duties as assigned to support department and company objectives.

**Skills and Qualifications **

  • Expert CNC setup on lathes and/or mills; experience with multi‑axis or live‑tooling strongly preferred.

  • Advanced control knowledge (e.g., Haas and Fanuc) with strong on‑machine editing.

  • Deep understanding of tooling, workholding, cutting theory, and process capability.

  • Advanced blueprint reading and GD&T; can guide inspection strategy and standards.

  • Proven record improving cycle time, setup time, tool life, and first‑pass yield.

  • Strong communicator, trainer, and technical leader on the floor; high ownership and judgment.

**Education and/or Experience **

  • High school diploma or GED required; technical certificate or apprenticeship preferred.

  • 5 years CNC machining with demonstrated complex setups and process optimization.

  • Forklift and crane operation experience required (certification can be provided).

  • Experience partnering with programming/engineering on process development.

**Physical Demands **

  • Regularly stand, walk, reach, handle tools/parts, and communicate.

  • Frequently bend, stoop, or kneel; lift and/or move up to 40 lbs.

  • Visual acuity required: close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Mental Demands

  • Maintain focus and accuracy in a fast‑paced, schedule‑driven environment.

  • Work independently on setups; manage priorities in a schedule-driven environment

  • Apply basic problem‑solving to routine issues; escalate complex problems promptly.

  • Balance short‑term task completion with adherence to long‑term quality standards and procedures.

  • Diagnose complex machining issues; balance near‑term output with long‑term capability.

  • Prioritize multiple jobs; make sound decisions under time pressure; mentor others.

**Work Environment **

  • Manufacturing floor with exposure to moving mechanical parts, cutting fluids, and airborne particles.

  • Noise levels range from moderate to loud; PPE required per area standards.

  • May rotate between machines, shifts, or cells based on production needs.
