LIBRARY SUPERVISOR
DEFINITION: The Library Supervisor works independently and is responsible for the general operations of the school Library Media Center. S/he performs a variety of specialized technical and clerical tasks relative to maintaining a well organized and functional library media center and supporting the instructional program of the school district.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Order books, periodicals, audio/visuals, software, and online resources for the library collection and use.
• Select materials through a regular process of reading, previewing and feedback from state curriculum frameworks, staff, and students.
• Catalog all new library materials.
• Make recommendations to the principal relative to the function of the library.
• Continually review library collection to remove outdated materials.
• Attend appropriate in-service and staff meetings.
• Teach library skills to students and staff.
• Supervise student groups who utilize the library.
• Prepare comprehensive notices/letters to students, staff, parents and the public.
• Keep staff informed of new books and materials in the library.
• Repair current library materials.
• Operate a variety of audiovisual equipment, such as TV/VCR/DVD, computer and printer.
• Use and instruct others in the use of technology, such as desktop publishing, word-processing, and web based research.
• Keep a variety of accurate records of library acquisitions, circulation and inventory; collect fees for lost and damaged materials.
• Prepares school, district, county, state and federal reports related to library books, materials and textbooks.
• Create and maintain an attractive atmosphere in the library.
• Organize reading activity events for students.
• Develop and present displays and bulletin boards that promote student interest in reading.
• Develop and present lessons to small groups of students.
• Help correlate library usage with the school plan.
• Solicit and coordinate community, parent, and student volunteer help.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Provide health related information to children and/or their parents.
• Inform children and/or their parents about medical services available through school or in the local community.
• Provide information to children and/or their parents about the Medi-Cal system and where/how to access applications.
• Refer children to medical services covered by Medi-Cal.
• Assist with the identification of at-risk children/families and refer them to the proper agencies for services.
• Attend the MAA Time Survey and ongoing MAA program policy/procedure meetings.
REQUIRED:
• TB test clearance.
• California Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
• A high school diploma.
• Proper English grammar and spelling.
• Knowledge of computer systems and library software.
• Keep accurate records.
• Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System, library terminology, and standard library practices and procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality of student-related information.
• The ability to maintain discipline and order among students using the library.
DESIRABLE SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS:
• Knowledge of general office methods and procedures.
• Positive experience working with children and adults.
• Satisfy the No Child Left Behind compliance requirements.
• Possess knowledge of children’s and young adult’s literature.
• Prior experience working with children.
• Work cooperatively with staff, students, and community.
