BILINGUAL PARAEDUCATOR
Bilingual Paraeducators for Limited or Non-English Proficient students are employed as needed and funded within the particular program budgets.
DEFINITION:
Under supervision, to assist teachers in instruction by performing tutoring as well as nonteaching tasks in the conduct of classwork, and to assist teachers and/or the school district in communicating with Non-English or Limited-English proficient parents. Proficiency in reading, writing and speaking English and Spanish is required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  1. Same as Paraeducator with the following additional duties required by the special needs of the Non-English or Limited-English proficient student and supervising teachers:

  1. Parent contact for translation on student/school issues.
  2. Assist with classroom learning activities.
  3. Observes and records work performance and social behavior in other class settings or on playground.
  4. Receives training in, and under direction, uses various programmed materials specific to needs of EL students.
  5. Conducts concentrated drill activities unique to the given special program.
  6. Under direction, uses contingency management or counseling techniques unique to the individual problems of each student.
  7. Assists Substitute teachers through knowledge of student performance and special needs.
  8. Maintains a high degree of confidentiality regarding students’ personal information.
  9. Translates and transcribe English/Spanish language.
  10. Inform children and/or their parents about medical services available through school or in the local community.
  11. Provide health related information to children and/or their parents.
  12. Assist with the identification of at risk children and families and refer them to the proper agencies for services
  13. Clerical support for health services referrals.
  14. Assist with developing, implementing and monitoring health related programs or systems for children and their families.

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Ability to function within legal and ethical constraints of position: trustworthy and confidential.
  2. Ability and knowledge to work with special needs students in a sensitive, patient and nurturing manner.
  3. Ability to take direction.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with children and adults.
  5. Present a professional appearance.
BILINGUAL PARAEDUCATOR (Continued)
  1. Willingness to work independently and as a member of a team.
  2. Must provide own transportation if required to work at more than one school site.
  3. Possesses ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  4. Ability to work one-on-one with students.
  5. Work cooperatively with staff and volunteers maintaining friendly relationships with a sensitivity for students with special needs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  1. Meets No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Highly Qualified Criteria.
  2. High School graduate.
  3. Within six months of employment, acquire and maintain certificates in First Aid and CPR.
  4. Previous experience working with school-age children preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Position may require heavy physical labor including ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move heavy objects or materials.
  2. Great physical demand for strength and endurance.
  3. Physical functions involve heavy physical exertion.
  4. Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  5. Position requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.
