BEHAVIOR SUPPORT/SPECIAL EDUCATION PARAEDUCATOR
DEFINITION
Under the direction of the site principal or designee, and in collaboration with the general education teacher and/or special education teacher, the Behavior Support/Special Education Paraeducator will provide academic and behavioral assistance to selected students in a one-to-one and/or small group setting.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The primary responsibility of this position will be to assist special needs students who require individual attention within a normal classroom setting. Incumbents typically assist students concentrating on emotional, behavioral and academic development as outlined in the students’ Individualized Education Plan (1EP) or in the students’ Behavioral Plan.
DUTIES

  1. Assists in implementing Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals and/or behavior plan goals.
  2. Conducts individual and/or small group instructional activities as directed by classroom teacher.
  3. Assists with learning activities, as directed, to improve motor skills, auditory and visual memory, auditory and visual association, hearing, sound blending and expression of language.
  4. Tutors individual students as well as small groups.
  5. Implements behavioral management strategies for students, using the same emphasis and techniques as the teacher.
  6. Under the direction of the school nurse, may consent to administer medication.
  7. Composes correspondence and completes incident reports.
  8. Provides an example to students in communication, self-control, and cooperation for the purpose of ensuring a positive learning environment.
  9. Escorts students from classroom to classroom and other programs.
  10. Completes daily or weekly logs of students’ behavior.
  11. Participates in various meetings for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information.
  12. Helps students to learn social skills.
  13. Assists in the monitoring and development of intervention plans and program policy; follows these guidelines for crisis intervention and physical restraint when trained.
  14. Provide school bus assistance.
  15. Accompanies student on school field trips.
  16. Under direction, provides assistance to other classroom teachers as students mainstream into general education classroom.
  17. Clerical tasks such as taking attendance, correcting tests or assignments, preparing work sheets and other study materials, filing materials and data entry of grades or assignments.
  18. Supervision of students.
  19. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Ability to function within legal and ethical constraints of position: trustworthy and confidential.
  2. Ability and knowledge to work with special needs students in a sensitive, patient and nurturing manner.
  3. Ability to take direction.
  4. Ability to establish and maintain rapport with children and adults.
  5. Present a professional appearance.
  6. Willingness to work independently and as a member of a team.
  7. Must provide own transportation if required to work at more than one school site.
  8. Possesses ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  9. Ability to work one-on-one with students.
  10. Work cooperatively with staff and volunteers maintaining friendly relationships with a sensitivity for students with special needs.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
  1. Meets No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Highly Qualified Criteria.
  2. High School graduate.
  3. Within six months of employment, acquire and maintain certificates in First Aid and CPR.
  4. Previous experience working with school-age children preferred.
  5. Training and/or experience with conflict resolution and physical restraint techniques desired.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Position may require heavy physical labor including ability to lift, carry, push, pull and move heavy objects or materials.
  2. Great physical demand for strength and endurance.
  3. Physical functions involve heavy physical exertion.
  4. Lifting over 50 lbs. or carrying any object over 25 lbs.
  5. Position requires the mobility to stand, stoop, reach and bend.
