Unit Managers play a vital role at the Placer Superior Court and are charged with overseeing a designated case type or area of the Court (Criminal/Traffic, Family Law, Civil/Appeals, Juvenile, Courtroom, and Master Calendar/Support Services). They are responsible for the daily supervision of 5-25 staff (depending on unit assignment) and report to the Chief Operating Officer. They have frequent interaction with other unit staff, the management and executive teams, judicial officers, as well as the Court’s justice partners. Unit Managers are involved in a wide variety of duties including performing and assisting with operational procedures, researching and interpreting frequently-changing codes, laws and regulations, and providing programmatic and policy recommendations.

Essential Functions

The Court reserves the right to assign or reassign duties as required to achieve business and operational objectives. Essential functions and tasks must be accomplished effectively, if assigned, and may include, but are not limited to, those listed below.

  • Select, train, motivate and evaluate employees; communicate expectations, monitor performance and complete and conduct performance evaluations; provide coaching for performance improvement and professional development; recommend and issue corrective and/or disciplinary action to address performance or conduct issues, in accordance with Court personnel practices, policies and labor contract provisions; recommend merit increases; manage timecards and leave requests; and other first-line management and supervisory duties, as needed.
  • Provide technical court-related expertise and assistance to internal and external customers; respond to complex and difficult questions; and assist in resolving difficult customer services issues.
  • Schedule; assign and review work of assigned staff.
  • Maintain knowledge of changes in directives, policies, statutes, and regulations that affect assigned area(s); identify, make suggestions, and implement necessary changes to ensure compliance.
  • Serve as a representative of the Court, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration and discretion in all interactions; provide detailed and accurate information to all those encountered in their work.
  • Work closely with the Chief Operating Officer, and/or Court Executive Officer, to plan and implement Court administrative and operational programs; develop and implement organizational policies, procedures, and goals for the Court (e.g., calendar, case flow management, automated systems, and record keeping).
  • Conduct individual and staff meetings, as needed.
  • Identify the need for, develop, and write operational processes and procedures.
  • Provide effective leadership and guidance; mentor, coach and develop staff; serve as a role model to assigned staff and all Court employees.
  • Research legal processes, statutes, laws, and Rules of Court.
  • Gather and maintain statistical data for monthly reporting activities.
  • Manage projects, as assigned, and complete them timely and accurately.
  • Manage, monitor, and assist with budgetary requests for grant funding for special court programs.
  • Serve on committees, related work groups, and attend meetings.
  • Provide support for bench and community activities.
  • Apply strategic and critical thinking skills to improve the performance of assigned operational area(s).
  • If assigned to oversee an outlying Court facility, monitor and report on-site facility maintenance needs, concerns, or issues; maintain professional relationships with vendors/contractors.

Qualifications

The standard qualifications for this classification are listed below; however, any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities and the ability to perform the essential functions may qualify.

: Five (5) years of increasingly responsible legal clerical, or administrative, experience of which at least one (1) year of lead/supervisory experience.

AND

: Associate Degree, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university in business, public administration, or an applicable or closely related field.

Note: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis. Additional education may substitute for up to two (2) years of experience requirement; however, education may not substitute for lead/supervisory experience.

Pay: $93,787.20 - $123,489.60 per year
